15. Given two points on the line:

y2 y1
(1) find the slope m
x2 x1
(2) write the equation of the line using this slope and either point y y1 = m(x x1)
(3) to find the x-intercept, substitute 0 for y in the equation from step 2 and solve for x.

16. A point is composed of an x-coordinate, which indicates horizontal movement from the origin, and a
y-coordinate, which indicates vertical movement from the origin. Thus, a point is represented by an
ordered pair of numbers. These coordinates are written in the order (x, y).

17. The graph of an equation represents all values for x and y which make the equation a true
statement; the graph represents all solutions to the equation.

18. To plot the point (5, 2)

The x-coordinate indicates horizontal movement from the origin; move to the right 5
spaces from the origin.
The y-coordinate indicates vertical movement; move down 2 spaces from the lastSRVLWLRQ
Mark the point.

19. Each method (the table-of-solutions, the intercepts, and the slope-intercept) will produce the
same graph because there is only one set of solutions. The table-of-solutions and the intercepts
methods are similar because both require setting a value for one variable and solving the equation
to determine the value of the other variable; in fact, when using the intercepts method, if (0, 0) is
an intercept then another method must be used to determine a second point. The slope-intercept
method is a combination of the other two methods because it determines the y-intercept and
another point; it is probably the fastest method.$QVZHUVZLOOYDU\

20. By solving the equation for y before using the table-of-solutions, only arithmetic is needed to solve
for y values rather than algebra skills. The corresponding y values for selected values of x are found
by applying the order of operations and arithmetic skills.
