I. OVERVIEW

A. BRIEF HISTORY

Because of the dark-skinned Negritos who lived there, the Spaniards renamed the
Negros Island Buglas and gave it the new name Negros.Ilog served as the
province's first capital until it was replaced by Himamaylan in 1743. In 1849, Bacolod
was named the province's capital. The province of Negros Occidental was
established on March 10, 1917.

The province was split in half in 1986, with Negros del Norte designated as the
northern province. But later that year, the Supreme Court ruled that the creation was
unconstitutional, which led to Negros Occidental being restored to health.

B. GEOGRAPHY

Negros Occidental is situated on Negros Island's western side. Negros Island is the
fourth-largest island in the Philippines, measuring 7,926.06 square kilometers in total
land area. kms. From north to south, the province is about 375 kilometers long.
Tanon Strait, Negros Oriental Province, the Visayan Sea, the Panay Gulf, and the
Sulu Sea form its northern, western, eastern, and southern borders, respectively.
Since Negros is primarily volcanic, its soil is excellent for farming. 80 percent of the
world's arable land is under cultivation.

C. POLITICAL SUBDIVISION

A province in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines, Negros Occidental takes
up the western portion of the Visayas. 7,844.12 square kilometers, or 3,028.63
square miles, make up the province's land area. 2,623,172 people were living there
as of the 2020 Census. This was equivalent to 2.41% of the Philippines' total
population, 12.74% of the Visayas island group, and 32.98% of the Western Visayas
region's total population. These numbers are used to calculate the population
density, which is 334 people per square kilometer or 866 people per square mile.

The "sugar bowl" of the nation is Negros Occidental, which is well-known for its
sugar production. More than half of the nation's sugar is made there. There are
fifteen sugar centrals spread out across the province.

However, due to the priority placed on sugar cane, other crops are imported from
nearby provinces. The province is starting to grow new crops like coffee, black
pepper, and ramie, among others, in response to the recent drop in the price of
sugar on the global market.

The town of Cadiz contains fishponds.

The town of Sipalay is home to one of the largest copper mines in the nation.

II. HOW TO GET THERE

-BY LAND

Getting to Bacolod City from Dumaguete City requires taking a Ceres bus.
Depending on the bus type, the cost varies from Php 290.00 to Php 380.00 for the
6-hour journey (air-conditioned or non air-conditioned).

-BY AIR

There are a number of commercial flights each day from Manila and Clark airports to
Bacolod-Silay Airport. It usually takes more than an hour to complete the journey.

-BY SEA

1. Nearly daily departures from the Port of Manila are made by 2Go Travel vessels
headed for Bacolod City. Depending on the state of the sea, the distance by sea
takes 20 to 22 hours. Depending on the type of lodging, prices range from Php
2,300.00 to Php 5,900.00.

2. There are several daily trips from Toledo City, Cebu, to San Carlos City, Negros
Occidental using the Tanon Strait, according to Cebu

Option A: Toledo City to San Carlos City, Negros Occidental Normally, the first trip
leaves the wharf at 7:00 AM, and the last one leaves at about 10:00 PM. Contrary to
the Toledo-San Carlos route, the Ro-Ro from Tabuelan typically sails only once per
day because there are so few of them.

Option B: Tabuelan, Cebu to Escalante, Negros Occidental Typically, a trip by sea

takes two hours.
3. There are a number of daily trips from Ilo-ilo to the Bredco or Banago Port in
Bacolod City. Depending on the type of lodging, the fare can range from Php 250.00
to Php 395.00 for the approximately two-hour trip.
