HISTORY

There have been proposals to rename the

current Western Visayas region into
“Madja-as Region”, the former name of
the region prior to Spanish colonization in
the 16 th Century. The proposed name is in
reference to the Confederation of Madja-
as, the former confederate kingdom of
the area which existed between the 12 th
century until 1569 and was initially ruled
by “Datu Puti”, the first monarch of
Western Visayas.
HISTORY

On May 25, 2015, the region was

redefined, when Western Visayas (Region
VI) lost the province of Negros Occidental
and the highly urbanized city of Bacolod
to the newly formed NEGROS ISLAND
REGION. However, the region was
dissolved, with Negros Occidental and
Bacolod returned to Western Visayas on
August 9, 2017.
CULTURE AND BELIEFS
• Heavily influenced by both Spanish and the later
American occupations of the region.
• Indigenous religion gave way to Roman Catholicism
as the dominant religion.
• When a family cooks a special meal, they share a bit
to neighbours.
• Cockfighting is a big sport and is one of the
industries helped the area diversify.
• If a gambler is mourning, he is not allowed to engage
in cockfighting because it is believed that it can only
end in loss.
• Native believes about the aswang and the babaylan.
Kulam or witchcraft, locally known as amulit is still
feared by many residents.
ECONOMY
The economy of Western Visayas grew by 6.1%
from between calendar years 2017 to 2018
compared to 8.6% growth between 2016 to
2017 reported by PSA (Philippine Statistics
Authority) Region 6. The region’s growth
approximates the national average GDP growth
rate at 6.2%. Total Gross Regional Domestic
Product (GRDP) amounted to P372.87 Billion
from P351.38 Billion in 2017 or P21.5 Billion
more in the value of goods and services
produced in Region VI.

ECONOMY
The 6.1% GRDP growth rate resulted
in the region becoming rank no. 12
among the 17 regions, excluding NCR.
However, in terms of magnitude or
size, Western Visayas remained the
5 th largest economy outside of NCR.

ECONOMY
Overall, the region a slower growth in all sectors.
Agriculture decelerating by 1.4%, Industry Sector
is almost the same (8.7% in 2017 to 8.6% in
2018) and Service Sector from 8.5% to 7.5%.

RD Ro-Ann A. Bacal of NEDA-VI, discussed some of

the factors which contributed to the GRDP
performance. The temporary closure of Boracay
from April 2018 to October 2018 resulted to the
decrease in visitors by almost 900,000 resulting to
less customers for hotels and restaurants.
ECONOMY
Less customers meant less orders for food items,
including rice, vegetables, meat, fish, eggs, fruits, etc.
Less demand for the products, meant less
consumption income for affected families. The closure
also resulted to foregone revenues from the LGUs.
Basing only from collections of terminal and
environmental fees, at an average daily tourist arrival
then of about 5,941. the LGUs experienced losses of
about 1.93M daily or 57.92M a month or an estimated
347.52M for 6 months. The loss of these revenues
meant that programs and projects that would have
been charged to this local fiscal resource were not
realized.
ECONOMY
Despite unfavorable conditions last year, the
region was the 3 rd highest producer of palay in
the country next to Cagayan Valley and Central
Luzon. Sugarcane output, mostly in Negros
Occidental decreased by 26.2% owing to the
reduction of sugarcane planting areas in
Western Visayas in response to low prices;
smaller cane because of reduced fertilizer use
in Central Visayas and the early cut-off of
milling operations in Northern Mindanao.
ECONOMY
The livestock, poultry and fishery
products, on the other hand, experienced
decrease in overall production due to less
supply, demand for products increased
resulting to a high food inflation rate
(8.4% in 2018 from 2.1% in 2017).
