Boost Convertor Calculations

The DC – DC boost circuit specification is as follows: Out power (P o) = 50W Input voltage Vin =
6V Output voltage Vout = 12V Operating frequency F = 25 kHz The output current (I ) equation
is given in 7 [1].

I o=Po /V o 0.1

The relationship between the input power (Pin), output power (Pout) and power – transfer
efficiency is given in

The maximum input current is also the maximum current through the inductor, it is denotes as
(can be obtained from 6)

I L .max =

4.17 ×12
I L .max =
0.92× 6
The inductor sizes are chosen such that change in inductor is no more than 10% of the average
current,

∆ I L =0.1 × I L.max 0.8

The ripple change in the inductor current would require an inductor size of;

3 ×0.50
L=
25000 ×0.3 ×125 0.9
L=1.6 μH

Now calculated the capacitor value;

4.17× 0.50
C=
25000× 0.01× 12 0.10
C=695 μF

A 695µF capacitor and 1.6µH inductor was selected. The DC – DC boost convertor circuit was
simulated in MATLAB Simulink, based on the calculated parameters. These parameters i.e. Duty
cycle, inductor, capacitor, DC input voltage source were inputted in their various block and a
MOSFET switch was selected. The Simulink model is shown in figure 5.3.
