CHILD
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) defined a child as any person who is under
eighteen (18) of age. Similar with the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural
Organization (UNESCO) and World Health Organization (WHO), defined a child as every human
being below the age of eighteen (18) years unless under the law applicable to the child.
Childhood as stated by UNICEF, on the other hand, is the time for children to be in school and
at play, to grow strong and confident with the love and encouragement of their family and an
extended community of caring adults. It is a precious time in which children should live free from fear,
safe from violence and protected from abuse and exploitation. Childhood is the state or time of being
a child; especially, the period from infancy to puberty. Parents and guardians are encouraged to raise
children to be ready to face the world when they reach adulthood.
Children should not experience discrimination especially at an early age. Let’s study how UNICEF
and other government organizations work to make sure children enjoy all their rights.

All children have all these rights, no matter who they are, where they live, what language they speak,
what their religion is, what they think, what they look like, if they are a boy or girl, if they have a
disability, if they are rich or poor, and no matter who their parents or families are or what their
parents or families believe or do. No child should be treated unfairly for any reason.
When adults make decisions, they should think about how their decisions will affect children.
All adults should do what is best for children. Governments should make sure children are
protected and looked after by their parents, or by other people when this is needed. Governments
should make sure that people and places responsible for looking after children are doing a good job.
8. Identity
Children have the right to their own identity – an official record of who they are which includes their
name, nationality and family relations. No one should take this away from them, but if this happens,
governments must help children to quickly get their identity back.
ADOLESCENCE
Adolescence as UNESCO defined is a distinct stage that marks the transition between childhood
and adulthood. It is the period during which individuals’ cognitive abilities fully mature.
UNICEF and WHO postulated that adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and
adulthood, from ages 10-19. It is a unique stage of human development and an important time for
laying the foundations of good health, developmental needs and rights as the World Health
Organization emphasized. Adolescence is a time to develop knowledge and skills, learn to manage
emotions and relationships, and acquire attributes and abilities that will be important for enjoying the
adolescents years and assuming adult roles.
Adolescence, therefore, experience rapid physical cognitive, and psycho-social growth. This
affects how they feel, think, make decisions, and interact with the world around them.
