MY PHILOSOPHICAL PREDISPOSITION

Use this guide to determine your philosophical disposition as you begin reading this chapter. If
you have selected two or more items from a particular philosophy, it indicates that your thinking
might match well with that perspective. If each of the items you c1hose is from a different
category, your philosophy might be called eclectic, that is, a combination of philosophies.

Perrenialism Essentialism Progressivism Social Reconstructionism

Let’s discuss our philosophical predispositions with our groupmates.

My philosophical predispositions are as follows:

2. The job of the schools is to produce citizens who can improve our society and solve the
problems it faces.
5. Things change, fads come and go, but certain values remain the same, such as honesty,
integrity and personal responsibility. This is what students need to learn.
8. Students should learn to appreciate beauty in the world because beauty is eternal. For
instance, paintings that were considered beautiful hundreds of years ago are still considered
beautiful today.
13. School is about more than just what’s in books. It includes how one lives his or her life,
worthy home membership and wise use of leisure time.

According to the four statements I chose that I consider most important with regard
to education and teaching, I am an eclectic. I possess a bit of Perrenialism , Progressivism,
and Social Reconstructionism philosophical perspectives.
I believe these are true because…
.…these say a lot about me as a student in a formal educational institution and a person
outside the said educational institution who lives in a set of principles in life.
As a Social Reconstructionist, although schools play a vital role in molding and producing
citizens who can improve our society and solve the problems it faces, I also strongly believe that
the purpose of schools and education is to have students think for themselves. I have reiterated
this point a couple of times, and I am not going to stop because this is necessary. Only when
someone starts questioning the society he or she is being educated, the society changes.
Perhaps the reason why I chose two statements that led to the philosophy of
Perrenialism is because I am a self-proclaimed bookworm. As a reader of varied literature, I am
reminded that despite the world’s cruelty, crudeness, and even state of futility, there is still
beauty and solace in it. As absurd and paradoxical as it may sound, it is the truth. Although the
world can be ugly, it can also be beautiful. This is the way of the world ̶ of the universe. The
way it keeps its balance between the black and white ̶ the yin and yang. Accordingly, students
must have such ability to say and see for themselves that a thing is black or white. To possess
the ability to bravely question the world they are in; to cultivate and continue the pursuit of
knowledge beyond the syllabus; and to think and reflect within themselves with reason. Even
though the way of the world is subject to change, certain things remain the same such as
honesty, integrity, and personal responsibility. These values keep you grounded and reminded
that wisdom is realizing how small we are. Moreover, one of the many things that made me
choose Perrenialism is the power of reading ̶ the power of good books, of art in its various
forms. These would contribute a great deal of knowledge and experiences that would shape us
to the person we have always wanted for ourselves; and these are enduring.
Progressivism believes of growth and development of lifelong learning and humanistic
education. To be able to touch the hearts and minds of the students and just merely teach
them from what is written in the syllabus makes an effective teacher. The knowledge from the
syllabus is often transitory but when you’re able to touch the hearts and minds of the students
with your way of teaching they will forever bring with them such learning throughout their lives,
and that is such a beautiful sight to behold, to be able to do something beyond what is
expected of you from the curriculum.
