Report about LAN (Local Area Network):

Introduc)on:

LAN stands for Local Area Network or private network which has small
geographical range (1km to 10km). Since LAN has small geographical
range, Home, Hotels, Schools and other small organizaAons.

Features of LAN (Local Area Network):

a) Cable used:

Since LAN has small geographical range, it uses cables for data sharing. The cables which are
used in LAN are Coaxial cable, Twisted pair cable and OpAcal fiber cable. In present Ame, the
most commonly used cable is opAcal fiber cable.

b) Topology used:

Topology refers to the physical or logical arrangement of components in a network. It defines

how devices, nodes, and connecAons are organized and structured to enable communicaAon
and data transfer between them. The topologies like Star Topology and Bus topology are used
in LAN.

i) Star topology:

ð A star topology is a topology for a Local

Area Network (LAN) in which all nodes
are individually connected to a central
connecAon point, like a hub or a switch

ii) Bus topology:

ð A bus topology is a topology for

Local Area Network (LAN) in which
all the nodes are connected to a
single cable.

c) Speed:

LAN (Local Area Network) has high speed of 1gbps or 1000mbps.

d) Devices used:

LAN (Local Area Network) uses the networking devices like Hub, Routers, modem, switch, etc.

e) Security:

LAN (Local Area Network) has high security and the there is no or very low risk of data loss.

Conclusion:
Local Area Networks play a vital role in modern communicaAon and resource sharing.
Understanding their components, benefits, and implementaAon consideraAons is crucial for
building efficient and secure network infrastructures. As technology conAnues to progress,
LANs will likely adapt to accommodate emerging trends and requirements in the digital
landscape.

Report about MAN (Metropolitan Area Network):

Introduc)on:

MAN stands for Metropolitan Area Network which has wide geographical
range (5km to 50km) and it lies between LAN and WAN. Since MAN has
wide geographical range, ISP, TV NET, and other big organizaAons.

Features of MAN (Metropolitan Area Network):

a) Cable used:

Since MAN has Big geographical range, it uses cables for data sharing. The cables which are
used in MAN are Fiber opAcal cable and twisted pair cables. In present Ame, the most
commonly used cable is opAcal fiber cable.

b) Topology used:

Topology refers to the physical or logical arrangement of components in a network. It defines

how devices, nodes, and connecAons are organized and structured to enable communicaAon
and data transfer between them. The topology used by MAN is DQDB, which is Dual Queue
Dual Bus topology. It operates two unidirecAonal buses that are independent of each other in
the transfer of traffic.

i) DQDB:

ð High speed shared medium access

control protocol that is used over a bus
network. It has two unidirecAonal buses,
for controlling purposes, where the bus
can carry data, video, and voice over a
network

watermark.
c) Speed:

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) has high speed of 1 gigabit per second to 100 Gbps

d) Devices used:

MAN (Metropolitan Area Network) uses the networking devices like Modem and Wire/Cable.

e) Security:

LAN (Local Area Network) has less security and the there is liZle or high risk of data loss.

Conclusion:
Metropolitan Area Networks (MANs) are vital networks that bridge the gap between Local
Area Networks (LANs) and Wide Area Networks (WANs). Their ability to efficiently connect
urban or campus areas has become indispensable for modern communicaAon and data
sharing. The evoluAon of MANs, driven by technology advancements, offers adaptable
topologies and improved connecAvity, ensuring their conAnued importance in our
interconnected world.
