Guidons and Uniforms of the French Dragoons under Louis XIV 1688-1714

Introduction

The doubtful practice of lodging bad Catholics in the homes of good Protestants to encourage them to
convert has gone into history under the name “Dragonnades” thus giving this arm of service a bad name. In
fact the infamous dragonnades involved units of all arms and there is no evidence to indicate that dragoons
were over-represented. The dragoons were the youngest arm of service, fashionable and flamboyant in their
dress and therefore readily identifiable as French soldiers. They were also Louis XIV’s “favorite” arm of
service. This made them obvious targets for the press and pamphleteers of the day, earning them an
undeserved reputation as instruments of an inhuman policy.

All the more reason to take a look at the appearance of those men who set a fashion quickly followed in the
armies of Europe.

In this book we are continuing the work begun on the flags and uniforms of the French infantry under Louis
XIV. The clothing contracts held in the Archives Nationales at Paris have once again helped to close some
of the gaps on the uniforms of the men and officers of the period. Unfortunately we do not have as complete
a source of information on the guidons of the dragoons and standards of the cavalry as we had in the Du
Vivier manuscript for the infantry. The allied trophies have helped to fill in some of the gap. For those
wishing to represent the units in tin or similar we have included the coats of arms of the colonels as far as
known.

Those who helped . . .

This is note the work of a single individual but of a team. The group, which assisted in the creation of the
“French Infantry”, collaborated even more closely in this case and for this reason I have included the names
of Gian Carlo Boeri and Yves Roumegoux on the title page. Together we followed Gian Carlo’s original idea
of looking for contracts in the Minutier Central at the Archives Nationales analogous to his experience for
other armies of the period, which form a large portion of the previously unpublished information in this
document.

Once again thanks is due to Général (C.R.) Michel Hanotaux for his support and his generosity in giving us
access to those contracts which he had also found in the Archives Nationales.

Those who know the work of my late friend Pierre Fouré on the subject will recognize that much is based on
his lead. The detailed descriptions assigned to Delaistre are based on his notes.

The lists of actions, quarters and camps are largely based on those diligently compiled by Claus-Peter
Golberg, the well-known authority on the period, who kindly allowed me to use the information here.

Guidons and Uniforms of the French Dragoons under Louis XIV 1688-1714

Origins
The need to transport infantry rapidly is as old as the history of warfare but it was only in the late
renaissance period that permanent companies of horsed infantry were set up using horses for transport but
fighting on foot. Initially they consisted of both musketeers and pikemen but the obvious difficulties of
transporting a 5-meter long pike on horseback soon reduced the function to infantry carrying firearms. The
French dragoons originated from the “arquebusiers à cheval” which existed already in 1560. The origin of
the name dragoon is lost in history and has as many explanations as there are authors, although the more
recent opinion sees it related to the German word “tragen” meaning simply carrying or wearing – the horse
carrying an infantryman. The name turns up already around 1585 but became a usual designation during the
Thirty Years War and was first used officially on the formation of 6 regiments in 1635. Despite that, official
usage still preferred the term “carabins”. Thus the Comte de Quincy was known as “Mestre de Camp
Général des Carabins” from 1660 to 1684.
The first companies and regiments of dragoons were disbanded at the end of a war and it was only in 1656,
due to the patronage of the King, that the first permanent regiment, Royal, appeared.

Père Daniel gives a description of the early service of the dragoons. They were used for escorting convoys,
harassing the enemy on the march or retreat, quickly occupying a post the infantry could not reach in time,
or simply fighting on foot or on horseback. In camp they were positioned on the wings or advance posts, at
river crossings, defiles, bridgeheads, to cover the headquarters. On the march they were put at the head
and tail of columns, etc. Only later did they fight in line although their horses were a lot smaller than those of
the cavalry (12 hands against 17 hands high). The liveliness of their charges and the speed, at which they
moved to wherever they were needed, made them best in the role of a reserve, which was their true position
on the day of battle. There they could be used to turn a wing of the enemy line, to take it in flank or rear, to
pierce a corps of infantry or cavalry which was too extended. They would charge a corps of infantry in flank
while it was starting a charge. In sieges they were put in detachments at the head of the sap to shoot at
anyone showing himself on a rampart and covered ways. In a word: they supported both cavalry and infantry
in a multitude of ways. No wonder that commanders could not have enough of them on campaign.

With regard to training and drill they learnt all the movements of the cavalry on horse and on foot and all
those of the infantry with the exception that, while the cavalry usually appeared sword in hand on a review or
when entering quarters, the dragoons appeared with the flintlock held high. Their exercise on foot was only
slightly different from that of the infantry.
st
Their rank was exactly specified in an ordonance of 1 December 1689 which stated that when cavalry and
dragoons were together, the dragoons were to be positioned on the left of the line, while on the march the
commander could place them at the head or tail of the column or mixed with the cavalry, as he judged
th
necessary. In garrisons they were treated as infantry and on campaign as cavalry. An ordonance of 30 July
1695 regulated the rank of the officers: in an enclosed place the cavalry and dragoon officers deferred to an
infantry officer of equal rank while on campaign the situation was reversed. In the case of a cavalry officer
and a dragoon officer of equal rank and date of commission, the dragoon officer deferred to the cavalry
officer.

In each regiment there was a Mestre de Camp (colonel), a lieutenant-colonel, a major, an aide-major, and in
each company a captain, a lieutenant, a cornet during wartime and a reformed lieutenant in peace, a
maréchal des logis (sergeant) and two brigadiers (corporals). The company also had a drummer and a
hautbois. Regiments that had conquered kettledrums were allowed to keep them (e.g. Bretesche).
There were usually twelve companies varying from 30 to 60 men. Each regiment had 3 squadrons.

An interesting point is the manner in which dragoons tied their horses when dismounted. A line attached to
the bridle was looped into a ring below that of the neighboring horse so that each horse was attached to the
next one. At each end of the line of horses was a dragoon and the whole was put under the command of the
most junior officer of the regiment. Releasing the horse at the end released all horses quickly to allow
remounting.

6
Guidons and Uniforms of the French Dragoons under Louis XIV 1688-1714

General Notes on Uniforms

th
An ordonance of 16 March 1676 specified the following: all officers of cavalry and dragoons are to arm
each trooper and dragoon in their companies with a good sword with a blade of at least 2 feet 9 inches royal
measure without taking the garde and hilt into account, 2 pistols (one for dragoons) and a musketoon and
each dragoon should also have a bayonet. Each dragoon carried a tool to facilitate passage during marches
1
instead of the second pistol (an axe, a pick, shovel, hoe or scythe).

Dragoon regiments seem to have been as slow as the infantry to adopt uniform but certainly the dragoon
cap was typical. For a rider dismounting to fight it was more convenient to sling the musket over the
shoulder. Slinging the musket was hindered by the broad-brimmed hat of the day and so, similar to the
grenadiers, it became usual to wear a simple peasant cap. This cap was typical of the peasant clothing of
the day, a type of „sleeping cap“ edged with fur. Rapidly accepted as the „dragoon headgear“ it became
enlarged, formalized and, a special mark of distinction, was also adopted by the officers. Dragoons were
always issued with the usual tricorn hat as well. The hat was worn off-duty and probably also in bad
weather. The cap was to be worn when passing review before the King, princes or the Colonel-Général. It
was worn while foraging and attached to the horse’s head during musters in front of an inspector. An
exception was the regiment Colonel Général, which wore the cap only when being reviewed by the King.

The Mercure Galant of 1680 mentions: „Each of the regiments had hautbois dressed in the colonel’s livery
and all officers were to be dressed in the uniforms of the regiments.“ That officers were to wear caps is
2
repeated for 1698.

In 1684 it was ordered that all officers of dragoons were to be armed with a flintlock, whether they were
3
active or reformed.

Lienhart & Humbert cite an ordonnance of 1690 that specified that the saddlecloths and holster covers were
to be of the regimental facing colour edged with white lace. They also speak of lapels, which did not come
4
onto style until much later. Here we have ignored them.

Looking at the data available on uniforms one is struck by the number of contradictions. It would appear that
the above ordonance may have been obeyed in the early years but later there was a tendency to change
more items to the coat colour while some, older items, retained the other colours. This assumption is
supported by the apparent contradictions in Delaistre, where several figures for the same regiment have
different uniforms, which are not to be explained by a difference in rank. Practical considerations such as not
wanting bright colours for breeches and waistcoats may also have determined what was actually worn.
5
In 1702 it was laid down that troopers are all to have boots and dragoons „bottines“ (leather leggings).

According to a note on the state of the cavalry and dragoons in Italy dated 02.01.1702: All companies of
dragoons are to have: capes, coats, caps, hats, gloves and neckcloths. For 35 men: 15 flintlocks, 15 sabres,
6
15 belts and 15 bandoliers, 25 pairs of leggings (bottines), 18 complete saddles, were ordered.

The available clothing contracts mention a black canvas „bourse“ or bag – since it is part of the clothing
rather than the military equipment we assume it was the container for personal possessions of the trooper
and usually carried wrapped in the cloak behind the saddle.

Guidons
Each company carried a guidon. The relevant regulations are reasonably precise:
„The guidons are longer than broad, of material similar to that of the ensigns with the ends a little rounded,
the lances 8 or 9 feet long.“ [Gaya 1678 p.132-134 cited in France Livrée]

1684 „The standard is a piece of cloth about one and a half feet square on which the arms, mottos or
cyphers of the princes or mestres de camp are embroidered. The standard is usually attached to the end of
a lance of 8 or 9 feet in length and in rainy weather it is enclosed in a cover, which is attached to the metal of
the lance.... The cornet is to have a boot made expressly to receive the heel of the lance of the standard and
a sash to tie around his body in combat for fear of it being taken from him.“ [Mannesson-Mallet 1684 T III
p92 cited in France Livrée]
(idem p 106) „ ... under the name guidon we understand a type of flag of which the cloth is similar to that of
flags but which is longer than broad and slit at the end to form two somewhat rounded points.“
(idem p.97) regarding trumpets: “…it is on this banderole that one usually paints or embroiders the arms of
the mestre de camp who owns the trumpet.“ [Mannesson-Mallet 1684 T III p97 cited in France Livrée]

Ordonannce of 1689: „From now on each squadron of cavalry or dragoons is to have two standards of the
livery of the mestre de camp and to avoid confusion and to ease distinguishing them from the enemy. It is
ordered that standards that did not have fleurs de lis are to have the sun on the right side and that the
7
devices of the mestre de camp are to be only on the reverse.“

The shape was not uniform but generally followed a pattern of rounded swallowtails. Various regiments
seem to have used a more triangular pattern. This could be due to the interpretation of captured examples
th
by Spofforth and Anna Beek but later in the 18 century similar patterns can be found again.

While the size is not specified, dragoon guidons seem to have been slightly larger than the 50cm x 50cm
size of cavalry standards of the period.

Per ogni compagnia di Dragoni (a cui si aggiungono 12 uomini) servono : manteaux, justeaucorps,
bonnets; chapeaux, gands, cravattes. pour 35; 15 fusils, 15 sabres, 15 ceinturons & 15
bandouillieres, 25 paires de bottines, 18 selles garnis (SHAT A/1).

7
revers.“

1680 facings blue.
1690 [L&H] (Grammont Royal) coat and breeches red, cuffs, linings, cap-bag, waistcoat isabelle, buttons,

blue. Drum white/blue, edge blue (probably).
1700 [Leleipvre] coat brown (feuillemorte?), cuffs blue, lining blue, waistcoat blue, breeches brown,
buttons and lace white, cap blue lined brown, white aiguillette and sash around waist. Shabraque
brown edged white. Musician identical. (Curious, since it disagrees with the other descriptions or,
was his brown meant to be interpreted as ventre de biche? Then it would conform.)
1700 [Kühn 6] coat red, cuffs red, lining red, waistcoat buff, breeches red, buttons white.
1715 [Pajol] coat red, cloak red, breeches red, cuffs ??.
1721 [MacCarthy-Delaistre] horse furniture ventre de biche (=isabelle), cloak red, officers with double

1735 [HKFS & Kannik] red, waistcoat, cap-bag isabelle

If you accept that “ventre de biche” is only another way of writing “isabelle” then the uniform remained the
same for a long time. Interesting to note that the musicians’ livery of 1721 corresponds to the early uniform.

Guidons:
1680 [Gal] Standards blue with the sun and the motto of the king. Three squadrons.

According to Dangeau the marquis du Cambout, a nephew of the Duke de Coislin and an old cavalry
captain, was made colonel of a regiment of dragoons raised in Bretagne. It was to be of 12 companies and
raised and supported at the expense of the province like that raised in Languedoc. A fund of 131 490 £ was
th
provided yearly for the support of the regiment. Sourches adds that on 7 February 1689 the marquis de
Cambout who had previously been a lieutenant-colonel of cavalry, thanked the king for the favour he done in
giving him the regiment of dragoons of Bretagne. The oldest son of the count de Roye of the house of

faite de lui donner le régiment de dragons de Bretagne (fils ainé de M. le comte de Roye, de la maison de la Rochefoucauld; grand

th th
[AG vol 1972 p.204 Intendance after Fouré] incident of 5 September 1706: „On 5 of this month a large
convoy left Suza composed of 900 mules with food and 600 mules carrying meal for the camp before Turin
as well as powder, and was attacked by the enemy near Pianese. The escort of the convoy, composed of
the regiment of CHATILLON and of 500 horse under the command of the Marquis de BONNELLE, was
entirely defeated and one has no news at all of M. de Chatillon who was at the head of his regiment. Only 5
or 6 mule drivers returned to Suza where they reported that their comrades had been knocked out by the
peasants and the mules stolen.“
A later letter confirms that they were taken prisoner after being attacked by the Prussian infantry regiment of
Anhalt-Dessau, which returned the captured guidons to Berlin.
