Objectives of Channel Modelling

Short-term goals
Select the most suitable existing models for immediate use.

Long-term goals
Determine Beyond 3G (B3G) propagation scenarios for measurement and modelling according to the WINNER scenarios. Develop methods on simplifying channel models without decreasing their reliability. Deliver radio channel models and corresponding tools for realistic performance evaluation of new radio interfaces on the link and system level. Develop techniques and methods on measurements, channel modelling, and HW/SW simulations.

Modelling principles
. The channel model for the MIMO case consists
of the time variant impulse responses between all the antenna pairs m,n: L h m ,n (t , ) = h m ,n ,l (t , ) ( l )
l =1

Natural treatment is through correlation matrices. Correlation based models

Equivalently this can be expressed as directed impulse response based on rays

h m2 ,m1 (t , ) = G T,m2 ( 2,l )exp j 21 2,l r2,m2 G1,m1 (1,l )exp j 21 1,l r1,m1 A l e j 2l t (t l ) 2 0 0
l =1 L

))

))

Now the IRs of the different Tx-Rx antenna pair have to be calculated, but the expression is more general being antenna independent. Natural way of treatment are the geometric rays. Ray-based models.

Propagation scenarios
WINNER deployment scenarios define the environments and elementary parameters used in the simulations WINNER propagation scenarios are based on the WINNER deployment scenarios.
Seven propagation scenarios
mostly with two sub-scenarios (Next slide)

Strength of the scenario thinking:

Realtively few scenarios (and environments) needed for the simulations, when selected properly.

Channel Measurements

The key technical requirements for the WINNER models are

wide bandwidth (100 MHz) high frequency (2 6 GHz) MIMO polarization Existing models are narrowband, and most of them dont support MIMO. Wideband MIMO channel measurement data is not yet available.

Situation when starting the channel modelling work:

We had to measure the channel characteristics in the WINNER project.
