16 TENSES IN ENGLISH

Present Tense.
Present tense shows the current action that is going to be performed.

1. Simple Present Tense.


Used to show facts, habits, and general circumstances that occur at this time.

 Formula : Subject + Verb (v I) + s/es


 Examples : I play games every day
: I eat some apples
2. Present Continuous Tense.
Used to talk about an ongoing action. The most important thing about this tense is the duration of time for
the verb.

 Formula : Subject + is/am/are + Verb(ing)


 Examples : I am playing Fortnite.
: He is playing basketball
3. Present Perfect Tense.
Used to indicate an action or event has been completed and the result is the result.

 Formula : Subject + Has/have + Verb (v3)


 Examples : I have completed my assignment
: I have made this cookies
4. Present Perfect Continuous Tense.
Used to indicate an action that started at the end and continues to the present. Usually actions that use
tenses for a long time of course and have relevance to current conditions.

 Formula : Subject + Has/have + been + Verb(+ing)


 Examples : She has been working in this school since 2000
: She has been cheating on me for a month
Past Tense.
Past tense expresses the actions that happened in the past.

5. Simple Past Tense.


Used to express an event in the past.

 Formula : Subject + Verb (v 2) or irregular verb


 Examples : I watched One Piece last night
: We completed the assignment
6. Past Continuous Tense
Used to show an event that is currently happening at the end. Usually there are two events that occur in
the end and the interrupted event that uses this tense.

 Formula : Subject + was/were + Verb(ing)


 Examples : I was driving a GTR
: He was reading the book
7. Past Perfect Tense
Used to show events that occurred before a certain time in the past and emphasize the outcome rather than
the duration of the occurrence. Usually used to indicate which event occurs first between the two
mentioned events.

 Formula : Subject + had + Verb (v 3)


 Examples : I had finished my homework
: He had completed his task
8. Past Perfect Continuous Tense.
The past perfect continuous tense is almost the same as the past perfect tense. Used to express an action
that happened in the past and was completed at a certain point in time in the past , but this tense
emphasizes the duration of its occurrence .

 Formula : Subject + had + been + Verb(ing)


 Examples : I had been watching One Piece with her since morning.
: She had been completing her assignment for the last two hours.
Future Tense.
Future tense expresses the actions that have not happened yet or the actions that will likely to happen in
future.

9. Simple Future Tense


Simple Future tense indicates an action in the future and cannot be influenced. It can also be used for
spontaneous future decision making or assumptions related to the future. “Will” and “be going to” are 2
common indicators in these tenses.

 Formula : Subject+ will/shall+ verb(v 1)


 Examples : I shall go to the gym
: She will cook pizza

10. Future Continuous Tense


The future continuous tense shows actions that will occur at a certain time in the future and actions that
will definitely occur in the near future.

 Formula : Subject + will be/shall be + verb(ing)


 Examples : She will be playing basketball with me
: We shall be eating the meal

11. Future Perfect Tense


Future perfect tense emphasizes on actions that have ended at a certain time in the future.

 Formula : Subject + will have + verb(v 3)


 Examples : He will have played basketball
: I will have completed my homework

12. Future Perfect Continuous Tense


Almost the same as all types of perfect continuous tense, future perfect continuous tense is a series of
actions that occur before a certain time in the future .

 Formula : Subject + will have been + verb(+ing)


 Examples : He will have been watching One Piece for over five hours.
: I will have been shopping on Saturday

Past Future Tense


13. Past Future Tense
Past future tense is basically used in indirect sentences, where there is a change of form to fit the existing
series of events.

 Formula : Subject + would + verb (v1)


 Examples : I would drive with her
: I would leave her
14. Past Future Continuous Tense
Past future continuous tense emphasizes the series or duration of an action occurring. In addition, it is also
usually used in indirect sentences .

 Formula : Subject + should be/would be + Verb(ing)


 Examples : I told that I would be doing my homework all day long.
: He should be driving me home

15. Past Future Perfect Tense


There are 3 times in the past future perfect that happened in the past. Pointing to a future time, a certain
time in the past, but the action that occurred must have been completed before the future time. And
usually used in indirect sentences.

 Formula : Subject + should have/ would have + Verb(v 3)


 Examples : She said that she would have completed her assignment.
: I would have bought a Supra

16. Past Future Perfect Continuous Tense


Past future perfect continuous tense is a tense form that is quite difficult. However, you can learn it from
the past future perfect tense. The difference is, the past future perfect tense emphasizes the duration of
time that has passed and the result.

 Formula : Subject + would have been + Verb(ing)


 Examples : He said that I should have been working here for two hours by that time.
: I heard that you should have been teaching here for ten years by this July
