CELTA Online Unit 2 Task 6 – The Lesson

Commentary

1. The teacher gives the students the first task after they have read the text.
False The students have the reading tasks before they read. This is important because then
they have a reason to read, as they would if they were looking at a text in their own
language. It is also important because the task guides them and helps them to avoid getting
stuck on new words.
2. The teacher sets a time limit for the first task.
True The students are given 2 minutes for the first reading task. This is to encourage students
to read the text fairly quickly so that they gain an overall understanding of the text.
3. The teacher moves around the room when the students are reading.
False The teacher sits at the front of the class so that students are not distracted from the
task. However, she is still observing students to check that they are doing the task.
4. The students check their answers in pairs before they go over them with the whole class.
True Jacqueline asks the students to check their answers to the reading tasks in pairs. She
encourages peer-checking before giving feedback on the task to give students more
confidence so that, when she asks individual students by name, they feel ‘safer’ in suggesting
the answers. This stage also gives her the opportunity to monitor and that in turn will help
inform how she manages the class feedback stage.
5. The teacher gives the answers.
False The students give the answers to the teacher and are encouraged to say why they
chose this answer.
