Introduction Paragraph of Critical Analysis Essay

 The paragraph should begin with an overview sentence that identifies the author,
publication source and date, and topic of the article.
o Eg: In “TITLE” published on DATE in PUBLICATION_SOURCE, Poole discusses X.
Eg2: Marshall tackles the issue of social justice in “Be an Activist” published by
the Chicago Daily in June 2021.
 The central argument of the article should then be stated.
 The central argument is followed by a brief summary of the article. Remember: a
summary should only include main points/ideas. This will be three to four sentences.
 The introduction ends with your (the student’s) thesis statement. The thesis statement
should identify the elements (tone and evidence) that will be analyzed and establish the
author’s purpose
o Eg: The author creates a disturbing tone to shock the readers into action, and
supports his central argument with accurate and representative evidence.
o Eg2: Hammond accomplishes his purpose to inform his audience on the effects
of climate change by utilizing authoritative and precise evidence and developing
an educational tone.
