Describe the following chemical reaction: 2K + 2 H2O -> 2KOH +

H2
Suggested questions:
1. What type of reaction is it?
2. What is its definition?
3. What are the reactants?
4. What are the products?
5. What exactly happens in this reaction?
In this reaction, we can see potassium displaces hydroxide from water to make potassium
hydroxide and hydrogen gas. so it is a single displacement reaction. It occurs when one element
replaces another element in a compound. We can combine two or more reactants to create
two or more new products. In the above example, potassium reacted with water to form
potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. So, this experiment has 2 reactants: potassium and
water. Thus, two new products are created, potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas.

CH4 + O2 → CO2 + H2O
This is an example of a combustion reaction. This reaction occurs when a substance
reacts with oxygen gas to form water and carbon dioxide and releases energy in the form
of light and heat. In the above example, methane and oxygen combine to form carbon
dioxide and water. This reaction releases heat and light because methane is burned by
oxygen. Therefore, the combustion reaction has two or more reactants react to make
carbon dioxide and water. We can see a lot of examples of combustion reactions such as
burning carbon, oil, and candle,…. People use heat and light from the combustion
reaction to service their lives. They are very important for the lives of people and affect
the existence of all plants and animals on earth.

Milk is an essential food for people, it provides many nutrients and is good for health. So, what does the
milk contain nutrition facts? To answer the question, I will describe the nutrition facts on the label of
pacific rice milk. The serving size of 1 cup is 240 ml. This milk provides 130 calories while there are 20
calories from fat. Besides the total fat is 2 grams, which is only 3% of the percent daily value. Moreover,
pacific rice milk contains 60 mg of sodium and has a total carbohydrate is 27 grams. In total
carbohydrates, sugars are 14 grams but dietary fiber is 0 grams. I think the sugar in this milk is quite high
while the dietary fiber and protein content ( 1 gram) is low. But it has more vitamins and minerals as
30% of calcium, 25% vitamin D, and 10% vitamin A,…. Almost milk will contain sugar and fat, so
customers need to choose the type of milk that is suit for them.

A virus is a small infectious agent. It is known as a parasite, which means it lives in other living. Viruses
affect all types of life forms, from animals and plants to microorganisms. They have genes but they don’t
have a cellular structure. They are much smaller than bacteria and have a diameter between 20 to 30
nanometers. Most viruses are unable to be seen even with an optical microscope. There are 2 types of
shapes which are rod-shaped and spherical-shaped. They have a parasitic mode of nutrition, so they
require a host cell in order the reproduce. Viruses spread in many ways. People use them to produce
vaccines and against infectious diseases such as chicken pox and measles. Recently, people must face to
covid 19 – a terrible disease caused by a type of virus from animals.

Now, I am a junior at Ha Noi university of industry. My major is food and technology. Therefore, I want
to become a chemical engineer for a food company in the future. What is the main task of this work? A
chemical engineer is responsible for performing chemical tests. Futhermore, they are also in charge of
doing research into the development of chemical engineering processes. To become a good chemical
engineer, some inportant skills that the employees need to practice and apply at work such as problem-
solving skills, teamwork skills, time management skills, and computer skills,... They are essential for a
chemical engineer to identify, evaluate, analyze complex problems, work well with a team and prepare
the tests and reports.

My wish is to become a chemical engineer in the future. As a result, I want to apply to the Kinh Do
company after graduation. It was established in 1993. The company started from a small factory with a
1,4 billion VND investment and has around 70 employees. But it is bought by Mondelez International’s
corporate in 2015 and is called the name – Mondelez Kinh Do Viet Nam Company. It specializes in food
and beverage. Some popular products are cookies (OREO, Cosy), snacks, crackers (AFC), chocolates, and
candies,…Its headquarters is located in Binh Duong, Viet Nam. Now, it has an office in Ho Chi Minh and 2
factories with more than 3000 employees. They work 8 hours a day that have 30 minutes to rest for
lunch. Paid holidays, annual bonuses, flexitime, and sick leave are the benefits that the company offers
to employees.

We have two nutrition facts labels about frozen peas and canned peas. I will compare them and
determine which one is a better choice. Firstly, they have the same serving size and calories. Both two
kinds of peas have 60 calories in 1 cup and 0 calories from fat. But frozen peas contain 125 mg sodium
less than canned peas, which have 380 mg sodium. Besides, the total carbohydrate in frozen peas is 11 g
while canned peas are 12 g. The content of dietary fiber in frozen peas is double canned peas.
Moreover, sugars and protein in frozen peas are more than in canned peas. Finally, vitamin A and
vitamin C of frozen peas are higher than canned peas. I believe that frozen peas are a better product for
health than canned peas. Therefore frozen peas are a better choice.

MAKING YOUR OWN REPORT

Today, I want to report an incident that has just happened in our lab recently. It was considered a test
tube breakage which took place at 3:15 pm, on Monday, October 31 st, in class 301, of the Ha Noi
University of Industry. That day, Ms. Hanh, a science instructor, was conducting an experiment that
needed to heat a test tube on an alcohol lamp flame, and then all students followed her instruction, but
one student broke the test tube. In the process of handling glass shards of test tubes, this student cut
his own hand. This student was not careful and hurried in the process of handling the shard; besides, he
did an improper method, and as the result happened this incident. His wound was treated at the lab and
then he was taken to the school's medical room. There was no significant damage to the classroom. My
report was finished.

Write a paragraph (120 – 140 words) about methods of waste disposal using the
following suggested questions:

 How many common methods of waste disposal are there?

 What are they?
 What are the advantages and disadvantages of each method?
 In your opinion, which is the best method? Why?
Nowadays, people usually use 3 methods of waste disposal. They are landfill, combustion, and recycling.
The first method, landfill, can handle large quantities of waste and types of waste but requires a lot of
lands. The processing time is long, as it causes negative effects on the environment by polluting the
treatment area and contaminating groundwater and air. Moreover, this method causes serious health
problems. The second method is combustion. It doesn’t occupy much land and has a short processing
time. However, the combustion is very expensive for building and running incineration plants, and staff
training. Besides, it generates much smoke that pollutes the environment. In the real life, it doesn’t
discourage waste reduction. The final method, recycling, is used to handle certain types such as paper,
metal, glass, and plastic. This method doesn’t take up much land and time. It helps protect the
environment and create jobs for people. But it is costly to recycle glass and plastic. From my viewpoint,
recycling is a good choice because it saves resources and energy. At the same time, it reduces stress on
landfills and combustion.
