Impression on how to make Filipino Culture work in terms of:


1. Team Building

Team building is the process of forming a group that works well together to achieve a
common goal. The essence and main objective of team building is to generate links and
connections in order to create a strong team. Building these relationships through teamwork is
extremely advantageous to businesses and organizations. Increased communication, planning
skills, staff engagement, and employee participation are all advantages of team building.

Team building exercises are activities that assist teams enhance their capacity to
collaborate on a variety of tasks by allowing them to practice in a low-stakes environment.

They can serve as icebreakers for new teams and allow teams to focus on specific skills, such as
problem-solving.

 Team leading is Command Responsibility. A good Team Leaders knows how to;

 Marunong makisama – a leader must know how connect with his group mates and how
to go along with someone others.
 Madaling lapitan – be approachable to achieve something good for the individual or the
group.
 Walang tinatago – do not keep secrets with your subordinates, be open to them and
share more skills and knowledge.
 May malasakit - to be concerned about the welfare of others.

In my own experience we Filipinos we tend to build our corporate culture based on personal
relationships. If we want to be in harmony with our colleagues, we must be friends with them
too. Filipino workplace culture differs from that of other nationalities. We’re loyal, hardworking,
and family-oriented. Filipino cultural values get recognized worldwide.
Because of our ability to learn and integrate our Filipino values to our work ethic.

2. Communicating

From my perspective, Indirectness, courtesy, and an attention on maintaining face


describe the Filipino communication style in the workplace. To keep the peace among their
coworkers, they will communicate politely, with consideration for others' sentiments, and
without engaging in conflict. The Filipino communication style in the workplace can be different
from other cultures and nationalities, which is important to understand when working with them.
Filipinos typically do better on teams when communication is open, information can be openly
exchanged, and creativity is encouraged.

As the Philippines is a group of islands, there is a variety amongst Filipinos, though the tone of
voice which varies widely by dialect and region.

Way of Communicating (verbal and nonverbal)

Verbal

Style: Filipinos express their ideas in a diplomatic, gentle manner. They fear being tagged as
arrogant while airing out their point of view over issues circulating in the office, so expect them
to be cautious and courteous. For Filipinos, there’s no better way to win the argument than
humility.

Adaptable: One of the reasons why foreigners hire Filipinos abroad is because of their
flexibility. They are adaptable and open to learning new things, including your language. English
is their second language, and it is widely spoken in the country. Many Filipinos especially those
employed outside of the Philippines familiarize themselves with the new language, even mimic
how you say it, to be able to communicate and build a strong relationship with their employers.
They will go over and beyond to understand your language and apply it when speaking to you.

Indirect Communication: They master the art of indirect ways of communicating. They are keen
observers when conversing with others – very much attentive to posture, expression, and the tone
of delivery.

Issues with saying ‘No’: They are known to be very hospitable and accommodating. Even if it’s
a bit uncomfortable for them, they will still give you a satisfying answer just to avoid unfortiable
and embarrassing situations.

Respect for hierarchy is a must: Filipinos honor those professionals they encounter in any
business setting through addressing them in their occupational titles – Lawyers (“Attorney”),
Doctors (“Doc”), Engineers (“Engineer”), and several other skilled professionals Another form
of showing utmost courtesy is saying “po” and “opo,” an innate polite form of speech when
engaging with an elder or someone of higher status.
Non–verbal

Assertiveness is not a common trait among Filipinos. They are generally conscious of their
actions and behave themselves because they want to avoid unnecessary confrontations or getting
involved in offending anyone. The focus is on ‘Pakikisama’ (togetherness) instead of fighting
amongst each other. Pakikisama’ is widely practised in the Filipino workplace..

Lip Pointing: This gesture mean Instead of using their fingers to point something, Filipinos will
use lips gestures as a form of pointing, instead of the traditional hand and finger pointing you
might see elsewhere.

Nodding and raising eyebrows with a smile: Nodding and raising eyebrows with a smile is one
way they greet each other quickly and casually.

Stress relievers: Filipinos are sociable with their teams and enjoy long conversations even at
work.

3. Motivating

Filipinos are very sensitive. By encouraging courtesy and discouraging adversarial


tendencies, a manager can create a high morale environment, free of unnecessary quarrels and
daily arguing. The norms of Hiya (politeness and also shame or embarrassment), Delicadeza
(sensitivity to transgression of social propriety), Amor Propio (sensitivity to personal
affronts)and Awa (pity, sympathy, psychologically means compassion, sincerity and loyalty) are
useful guides in achieving personal dignity and self-esteem.

Filipino term for confidence is “Tiwala”- belief and generates culturally defined feelings of

Katapatang Loob – persistence


Katibayang loob – inner strength
Kalakasang loob – daring, willpower
Sigla – promotes outstanding performance, transcend the boredom of routine work and to
reach out for excellence. People who are masigla are achievers and generate the feelings of:
Kagaanang Damdamin – lightness of feelings
Katiwasayang Paiisip – clearness of mind
Kalawakang pananaw – broadness of vision
Kaya – it is a kind of aptitude, a proficiency for doing things, the ability to act, the competence to
do anything easily and well. Kaya consciousness brings out from individuals motivating forces:
Kasikapan – industriousness
Kasinupan – self-discipline
Kahusayan – expertness
A worker's engagement and motivation at work are significantly influenced by their level
of job satisfaction. Since there isn't really a single "secret" to keeping employees happy at work
and with their employer, managers and HR departments work to maintain employee satisfaction
by implementing a variety of incentive programs, including a rewards and loyalty program,
referral incentives, and performance-based bonuses.

4. Leading

Gabay – means guide. Filipino social organization is still kinship oriented, with the family as it’s

Maka magulang-na-pagpapansin – paternalism

Makasariling-pagmamasid – personalism

Makamag-anak-na-pananaw – familism

Filipinos are not only hardworking employees but strong and independent leaders, too. Filipino
values and culture in the workforce also work.
