1. For the job of Firefighters, the standards are to ensure the safety of the people in
adverse situations. So that is the reason to set the requirements accordingly not to keep
out the girls and women from this job. For this kind of job or situation, people with more

manpower are required. They are not discriminated against based on gender, rather
they focus on strength and endurance so that more lives can be saved. It would be
better to be an overprepared man force than underprepared when you are responsible
for saving the lives of people. According to the genetic view or in commonality, man has
more power than the females.

2. BFOQ is the Bona Fide Occupational Qualification defense that requires an employer to
show that a particular skill is necessary for a particular job's performance.

In my opinion, the ministry should not be challenged based on sex discrimination. As

everyone knows they should have physical power and proper training to apply for this
job. The standards are higher because sometimes there are very bad conditions that
need to be dealt with to ensure the safety of the people in such conditions. The
Supreme Court said that they were not discriminated against for the job rather they
were provided with the pieces of training, they just needed the fittest people whether
men or women.

3. Firefighting is a special job that is mostly associated with high risks. There is a special
test at B.C. University just to find an eligible candidate for the job. There is no intention
in that test to discriminate against someone. The reason behind this high entrance test
which holds the maximum safety rules or training to safe people under extreme
conditions. This special test is not discriminated against because only 35 percent of
women pass the exam as compared to men. Because there was a dire need for proper
training for the welfare of your crew members as well. They are giving equal opportunity
to women as well as not discriminating against them.

4. The Ministry of spokeswomen said that if they lower the standards there might be
consequences bad. Because everyone needs to make sure that the people and their
crew members are safe, it is only possible, if all crew members have the almost same
physical power and endurance. Man has more power as compared to women which is
the only reason they pass the test more than females. The suggestion for this problem is
that the women can have one year more training than the men to pass the entrance test
and to show that they have the physical power to do this job.
