Mixture and Alligations

Introduction
1. Mixture:
Mixture is a solution containing two or more products which bears a fixed
proportion to each other, by quantity.

2. Alligation:
It is the rule that enables us to find the ratio in which two or more ingredients at
the given price must be mixed to produce a mixture of desired price.

3. Mean Price:
The cost of a unit quantity of the mixture is called the mean price.

4. Rule of Alligation:
If two ingredients are mixed, then
Quantity of cheaper C.P. of dearer - Mean Price
=
Quantity of dearer Mean price - C.P. of cheaper
We present as under:

(Cheaper quantity) : (Dearer quantity) = (d - m) : (m - c).

5. Suppose a container contains x of liquid from which y units are taken out and
replaced by water.
y n
After n operations, the quantity of pure liquid = x 1 - units.
x

Solved Examples
Q.1) 8 litres are drawn from a cask full of wine and is then filled with
water. This operation is performed three more times. The ratio of the
quantity of wine now left in cask to that of the water is 16:65. How
much wine the cask hold originally?
a) 24 litres
b) 32 litres
c) 40 litres
d) 42 litres
e) None of these
Answer 1- A
Explanation:
Let the quantity of the wine in the cask originally be y litres
Then, quantity of wine left in cask after 4 operations =(1−8/y)4 litres
Therefore, (1−8/y)4= 16/81
=>[1 – 8/y]4 = (2/3)4
y = 24 litres

Mixture and Alligations

Answer 12–B
Explanation:
Number of liters of water in 125 liters of the mixture = 20% of 150 = 1/5
of 150 = 30 liters
Let us Assume that another 'X' liters of water are added to the mixture to
make water 25% of the new mixture. So, the total amount of water
becomes (30 + X) and the total volume of the mixture becomes (150 + X)
Thus, (30 + X) = 25% of (150 + X)
Solving, we get X = 10 liters

Mixture and Alligations

Answer 13– C
Explanation:
S.P. of 1 kg of mixture = Rs. 9.24, Gain 10%.
Therefore, C.P. of 1 kg of mixture = Rs.100/110 x 9.24= Rs. 8.40
By the rule of alleviation, we have:
CP (1st kind) CP(2nd kind)
9………………………………………………………………….…………….. 7
………………………………….….8.4…………….…………………………..
1.4 ………………………………………………………………………………. 0.6

Ratio of quantities of 1st and 2nd kind = 14: 6 = 7: 3.

Let x kg of sugar of 1st be mixed with 27 kg of 2nd kind.
Then, 7: 3 = x: 27
x = (7 x 27)/ 3 = 63 kg.

50 kg 100 kg
10% x%
20%
(x-20) 10
So (x-20)/10 = 50 kg/100 kg
Solve, x = 25%
100 kg costs = 100*7 = Rs 700
So, at 25% profit SP of 100 kg is (125/100) * 700 = Rs 875
So, SP of 1 kg = 875/100 = 8.75

Mixture and Alligations

Answer 20– B
Explanation:
A = 2x, B = 5x
After 7 litres draw out:
A = 2x – (2/7)*7 = 2x – 2, B = 5x – (5/7)*7 = 5x – 5
After 18 l of A put back, A = (2x – 2) + 18 = 2x +16
So (2x+16)/(5x-5) = 8/11
Solve, x = 12
So, A = 2x = 2*12 = 24 litres

Solutions
Answer 1 – C
Explanation:
216 = 2000*r*1/100
r = 10.8%
By the method of allegation:
1st part 2nd part
8 15
10.8
4.2 2.8
4.2: 2.8 = 3: 2
At 15% = (2/5) * 2000 = Rs. 800

Answer 2 –B
Explanation:
1st pair: 2nd pair:
50 95 60 90
80 80
15 30 10 20
Final ratio = 15:10:20:30 = 3:2:4:6

Answer 3 – D
Explanation:
P:Q= 4:1
Let P=4x and Q=1x
P:Q(10 Liters)= 8:2
4𝑥 − 8 2
∴ =
𝑥 − 2 + 10 3

On solving, we get x=4.

∴ Original Quantity of P= 4X= 4x4= 16.

Answer 6 – E
Explanation:
Milk =48 water =32
48/(32+x) = 2/3 = 40

Answer 7 –B
Explanation:
Amount of milk left after 3 operations
40(1-4/40) ^3 liters = 29.16 litres

Answer 8 – E
Explanation:
20litre given remaining = 70-20 = 50litre
Quantity of milk = 50*70/100 = 35litre
Quantity of water = 50-35 = 15litre
20litres of water added = 50+20 = 70
% of milk = 35*100/70 =50%

Answer 9 – C
Explanation:
Quantity of milk in the final mixture = 30[1-(5/30)]3
= 30*(5/6) 3
= 30*125/216 = 17.36 liter = 17

Answer 10 – B
Explanation:
50%(100+x)=80
x = 60

Answer 11 – D
Explanation:
40………………………………..300
………………….55…………………….
245…………………………………15
(Number of labourers)/(Number of supervisors) = 245/15 = 16.33/1 =
163.33/10
∴ Number of labourers = 163.33 = 163

Answer 12 – C
Explanation:
70/100 = 100x – 30.50(110)/28.50(110)-100x
0.7 = 100x-3355/3135-100x
2194.5 – 70x = 100x-3355
170x = 5549.5
X = 32.64

Answer 13 – B
Explanation:
50*15/100 = (50+x)*12/100
7.5 *100 = 600+12x
12x = 150
X = 150/12 = 12.5litre

Answer 14 – B
Explanation:
(5+x) (20%) = 5(50%) + x(0%)
(5+x) 0.2 = 5(0.5) + 0
1+0.2x = 2.5
X = 2.5-1/0.2 = 1.5/0.2 = 7.5

Answer 18 – B
Explanation:
Initial = 9x and 7x
Quantity of A in mixture left = (9x- (9/16)*8)
= 9x – (9/2)
Quantity of B in mixture left = (7x – (7/16)*8)
= 7x – (7/2)
[9x – (9/2)]/[7x – (7/2)+8] = 9/8
18x-9/14x + 9 = 9/8
144x-72 = 126x+81
18x=153
X = 153/18 = 8.5
