The Cunning Cat

[Mother Mouse and her 2 daughters are in their spare room because Mother Mouse is getting ready for a
journey. Her daughters help her. The Cat is outside, peeping now and then through the window, but so
slyly that the mice do not see her.]

Mother Mouse (going): Now mind you keep one eye on our food supplies, children?

Little Mice: We will, dear mother!

Mother Mouse: Let no one in,—no one! no one!

Little Mice: No one, dear mother!

Mother Mouse: I’ll not be long away. Good-by, my children.

(Starting out; stopping.)

Mind you show no one the food supplies, children,—no one! no one!

Little Mice: No one, dear mother!

[Mother Mouse goes out of the front door.]

Cat (calling through window): Oh, Little Mouse! Oh, Little Mouse!

Little Mouse 1 (showing alarm): Who calls?

Little Mouse 2 (shaking her head): I-I don’t know.

Cat (very sweetly): Only me! Will you please let me in?

Little Mouse 1 (shaking head): Mother said—

Cat (interrupting quickly): This is a matter of business!

Little Mouse 2 (shaking head). But mother said—

Cat (interrupting): This is important!

Little Mice (as before). But mother said—

Cat (interrupting): I need your help ! You are so kind.

Little Mouse 1 (showing she is pleased; starting to window): Oh, do you truly think so?

Little Mouse 2 (panic): No! don’t be pleased by her words!

Cat (nodding): Every one thinks so!

Little Mouse 1 (ignoring her sister; showing she is more pleased; going to the window): Oh, do they,
truly?

Little Mouse 2 (trying to stop her sister): Don’t listen to her!

Cat (smirking): Oh, truly they do!

Little Mouse 1 (showing she is most pleased; opening window): What else nice say they?

Cat (jumping in): Then I’ll tell you by and by.

(Sniffing)

There must be so many food supplies here! Am I right?

Little Mouse 2: Hey Mother said—

Cat (interrupting): Only tell me if I be right! I won’t hurt you!

Little Mouse 1 (hesitating): Well—then—yes. It is our food supplies for winter.

Cat (nodding): Woah you are so lucky, I can’t even find a food for today (pretending to be sad)

Little Mouse 2 (whispering to her sister): She is pretending! She wants to steal our food!

Little Mouse 1: Really? I don’t think so.

Cat (smiling): Hey if you can share your food supplies with me, I’ll tell you something more.

Little Mouse 1 (greatly pleased): About me?

Little Mouse 2 (Rolling her eyes)

Cat (nodding): Yes,—what every one says about your being so beautiful. But first I want you to share
your food with me.

Little Mouse 2: No! We Won’t!

Little Mouse 1: No problem, you can have it and you should tell me more about it.

Little Mouse 2: What? Are you really let her to have it?

[The Cat runs quickly to the place where mother mouse save their supplies. The cat takes all of the food
supplies and runs as quickly as she could to the window and jump out]

Little Mouse 2 (panic): She takes all of our food, it’s all because of you!

Little Mouse 1 (regretting all of her decision): I’m so sorry.
