Worksheet No. 4
Vertical Motion
Instruction: In a clean white sheet of paper, answer the following problems, show your complete solution, and box your final answer.
A. Complete the table by solving the unknown quantities using the kinematic equations for vertical motion. Show your complete solution.

B. A large boulder is ejected vertically upward from a volcano with an initial speed of 40.0 m/s. Air resistance may be ignored. (a) At what time after being ejected is the
boulder moving at 20.0 m/s upward? (b) At what time is it moving at 20.0 m/s downward? (c) When is the displacement of the boulder from its initial position zero? (d)
When is the velocity of the boulder zero? (e) What are the magnitude and direction of the acceleration while the boulder is (i) moving upward? (ii) Moving downward?
(iii) At the highest point?
C. From the ground a wooden block is thrown upward. The position function of the block is y ( t ) =−4.9 0 t 2+ 28.0 t +18.5 , where t is in second and y is in meter. Determine
the following:
1) initial velocity of the block;
2) time it takes for the block to reach the maximum height;
3) maximum height;
4) time it takes for the block from the maximum height to hit the ground; and
5) final velocity of the wooden block.
6) the speed and direction of the motion at time 1.50 s and 2.30 s
