# 30 GANDHI BAPU- THE THREE WISE MONKEYS

Mindfulness Activity: Observe your heart-beat


Everyone will jump up and down for 1 minute. Tell the children when to stop. Now have them put their
right hand on their heart. (Show them by example). Tell them to close their eyes and observe their heart
beat. Does it have a sound? What does it sound like? What does it feel like?

Review: Who have we been learning about? (Gandhi Bapu) What have we learned about Gandhi Bapu
so far? (His name was Mohandas, He was born in Porbandar, he would say Rama Bhagvan’s name when
he was scared, he thought of the whole country and world as his family.)

LESSON PLAN

Introduction: Story Of The Three Wise Monkeys


Objectives:
Once some visitors from Japan came to see Gandhiji in the  Familiarize children with
Sabarmati Ashram. They brought him a small gift, a statue of Gandhiji
three monkeys. One had his eyes covered, another his  Introduce idea of See no Evil,

mouth and a third his ears. They explained that the statue

FOR 1ST-3RD GRADE


Video: Show Teen Bandar
After the video finishes: Ask the children to cover their eyes. What does this monkey teach us? What
does it mean to see no evil (Khabhi bhuraiyi math dekh)?

Explain never see the bad in others. Always try to find the good in everyone and everything.

Ask the children to cover their mouths. What does this monkey teach us? What does it mean to speak
no evil? (Khetha na kharo gundhi baath)?

Explain Never speak harshly or use dirty words. Never lie.

Ask the children to cover their ears. What does this monkey teach us? What does it mean to hear no
evil? (Jooth par math dho dhyaan)?

Explain do not listen to gossip or lie about people or situations.

Video: Show Teen Bandar once more, so that the children remember the song.

Closing: Let us try to remember what these three monkeys have taught us and let us practice seeing no
evil, speaking no evil and hearing no evil.

FOR 4th-5th GRADE


The first monkey closes his eyes to teach See No Evil.
Objectives:
Ask the students what they think this means? (To

The second monkey closes his mouth to teach Speak No Evil. Ask the students what they think this
means. (Do not gossip or tell lies about people, do not use bad words, do not speak meanly.) For
example, even when we get angry we should not use hurtful words or gaali. Because we can hurt people
with our words and our lies. Can you give me some other examples of how we can speak no evil?

The third monkey closes his ears to teach Hear no Evil. Ask the students what they think this means.
(This monkey teaches us not listen to lies or gossip about situations. And also not to listen to friends
who make us want to do wrong things.) Can you think of some examples of how we can hear no evil?

Activity: Seeing the Good in Each Other: Ask the students to get into pairs. Give each student half a
piece of paper and markers or crayons. Ask them to write their partner’s name on the paper. Now ask
each student to write three good things about their partner. It can be a character strength, something
they are good at, or anything else positive about their partner. After they are done, collect the pieces of
paper and put them up around the room.

Closing: We can say Gandhiji’s three monkeys teach us to be positive and try to bring good thoughts and
habits in our lives. Let us remember the lessons of these three very wise monkeys.

FOR 1ST-3RD STD


Introduction: Today we are going to review what we have learned about Gandhi Bapu and then we will
play a game.

Review Game: We are going to play a game. I have a ball that I will throw to someone, but first I have to
say their name. That person will say something they learned about Ganndhiji. Then they will say another
person’s name and throw the ball to them. That person will then say one thing they learned about
Gandhiji. Play this until all the major concepts get reviewed.

Game 2: Gandhi Bapu Bhole


Now we will play another game. I will say Gandhi Bapu bhole and one action, and all of you must do that
action. But if I only say the action, without saying Gandhi Bapu Bhole, then you should not do the action.
If anyone does the action, they will sit down in their spot.

Closing: Tell the kids that throughout the year, we will continue to listen to stories about Gandh Bapu.

FOR 4TH-5TH STD


Introduction: Video: Teachings of Gandhiji
Today we are going to watch another short video clip. Objectives:
The video highlights some of the different principles that  Learn about Gandhiji
Gandhiji practiced and inspired others to follow. Show  Reflect on what they have
learned about Gandhiji
video.

Discussion: What did you learn from this video? What Time: 30 minutes

Review Activity: Now, we have been learning different Teachings of Gandhi
things about Gandhiji over the last couple of weeks. Today are going to review some of the things we
have learned.

Pass out a Gandhiji worksheet to each of the students and pass out markers/color pencils/crayons. Tell
the students that on this paper, we will first write the date of Gandhiji’s birth. Does anybody know?
(October 2, 1860). Do you know where he was born? (Porbandar, Gujarat). Now let us write the date of
his death. (January 30, 1948).Do you know where he passed away? (New Delhi, India).

Now I want you to write 5 things anywhere on this paper that you learned about Gandhiji or from the
stories of Gandhiji. After you finish writing the five things, and if we still have time, you can color your
drawing.

Closing: Ask a few of the students to share one thing they learned about Gandhiji. Collect the
worksheets from the students and put up around the room.
