FIELD EXERCISE NO. 3

AREA BY TAPE

I. Objective
1. To determine the area of a given lot by taping

II. Materials/Tools/Instruments
1. 30/50 meter steel tape
2. Range poles
3. Marking pins/stakes

III. Sketch

IV. Procedure
1. Five points will be marked on the field by the instructor to form an irregularly
shaped lot.
2. Mark and designate the lot corners as A, B, C, D, & E and subdivide the lot into
three triangles.
3. Select the baseline for each triangle and set the range poles at the ends of this baseline.
4. Using all the 3 methods, employing one method for each triangle, construct the altitude
of each triangle, measure, and record.
5. Compute the area and record the triangle.
6. Get the sum of the triangular areas to obtain the total area of the irregularly shaped lot.
