INTRODUCTION

It is general that social media has a lot of positive effects on our lives. One of the main points

that social media has granted people to create a conversation even when they are in different

locations. Social media has a huge number of forms, such as, Facebook, Tik-Tok, Instagram

and Twitter.. Students who study abroad or far away from home, in particular, rely on the

aforementioned social media networking sites to easily connect their family and friends.

One research by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2011) discovered that home was the most

well-like zone of people to use the internet. Furthermore, this statement represents an increase

in demand for social media at home by up to 26% in 2008-2009 among Australian residents.

Moreover, Mark Zuckerberg, who has a genius mind, has created a very popular app-Facebook

which can convey messages, emotions, and information files.

The goal of this analysis is to better understand the behaviors and frequency of people using

social networks today.

METHODOLOGY

To analyze and survey on online media usage and habits of university students, an

investigation was used to clarify the issues mentioned above. The inspection was conducted

around mid-March 2022. The sample size was 52 international students enrolled in an

Academic English course at Western Sydney University who filled out questionnaires. The

majority of students were randomly selected and from the south of Viet Nam.

The instrument of the survey was in the form of a questionnaire. It was created by Google

Forms and used as a research medium. The questionnaire had a total of 11 closed-ended

questions. The first one question elicited information about the individuals of respondents,

specifically the age. Another four questions collected information relating to their favourite

social networking site, the types of devices used for it, how much time was spent on it, and the

location to use it. Moreover, the following two questions gathered information regarding when

they first start using social media and the number of friends they had on social networking

sites. The next two questions gained data relating advertising and their experience when

purchasing goods on social networks. Finally, two questions asked participants to take a stance

on Internet privacy concerns and the confidential information they had put out on social

networks.

The questionnaires were responed online by sending the Google Forms link to WSU students,

who used Messenger. The subjects took 3 minutes to complete all the questions including time

to click on the link and submit their answers.

In conclusion, the data was added up and converted into percentages. The results were

presented in graphic form for analysis.

RESULT

Figure 1:

The bar graph illustrates the top social media sites among students. Overall, students prefer

Facebook to other sorts of social media.

As can be seen in the chart, Facebook was used as the most prevalent app for students with

57.7 percent, equally popular, Tik-Tok also accounts for 23.1 percent of users. There were 15.4

6
percent of WSU students using Instagram, whereas both Netflix and Zalo had an equal

percentage (1.9 percent).

Figure 2:

The pie chart illustrates the purpose of using social media that participants utilize. The statistic

was taken from 52 students studying at Western Sydney University in VietNam in March,

2022.

It was evident from the bar chart that the number of students using social networking sites to

communicate with their friends and reach new people was about 23 persons, which means this

was the highest figure with 45.1 percent while students utilizing social media to keep in touch

with their family was about 4 persons (7.8 percent) - the lowest figure. Besides, the total

number of respondents who spend time on social networks to search for information was 17

people, accounting for 33 percent. Finally, the chart shows that 12 people (8 percent) used

social sites for work and business related activities.

Figure 3:

The given pie chart demonstrates the percentage of participants’ reactions to social media

advertisements. Generally, most students have a negative perception of advertising on social

networking platforms.

The chart shows that the people who feel “somewhat annoyed” had the highest rate at 34.6%,

while opposite of that, the number of people who feel “very useful” has the lowest rate at only

5.8 percent. Furthermore, 30.8 percent of pupils reported feeling "normal," with 15.4 percent

reporting "very annoyed” and 13.5 percent reporting "somewhat useful."

Figure 4:

The bar chart depicts the most common devices used by pupils. In general, the cell phone is a

widely used instrument.

It is apparent that individuals prefer to use mobile phones over other devices, with 90.2

percent referring to them. In contrast, laptop and tablet just accounted for 7.8 percent and 2

percent respectively. According to the results of the study, the desktop computer appears to be

the rare gadget of choice, with 0 participants selecting it.

Figure 5:

The chart demonstrates which information that individuals openly showed on social

networking platforms. Overall, people tend to show the “email address” most on their own

social networks.

It is worth noting that “sexual orientation” has the lowest score of 17.3 percent, followed by a

number that hasn't moved much: 19.2 percent goes to “political views”. The percentage of

persons picking these two groupings is the lowest. In terms of “instant messenger addresses”,

the entire result is 26.9 percent. Following then, there is a sharp change in the data, with the

information about “hometown/city” and “relationship status” group pair accounting for 46.2

percent. Also, on social networking sites, “photos of yourself” and “mobile phone number”

account for around 50% of the total, while “real name” accounts for 53.8 percent. Finally, the

10
two ranges that people choose the most are “email address” and “photos of others” with 69.2

percent and 61.5 percent percentages respectively.

DISCUSSION

The poll was created to display information about social media usage habits, favorite devices,

purpose, and reaction to advertising. Furthermore, this poll assists us in recognizing the rapid

expansion of social media use in today's young population.

The study's key conclusion was that the majority of students prefer Facebook to other kinds of

social media. It is most likely due to the popularity of Facebook among many individuals

throughout the world, where they can quickly locate friends and share images, status updates,

and tales on a regular basis. More over half of those polled said their favorite device for

accessing Facebook was a mobile phone. It is probable that the mobile phone is slight, and

people use it easily. Nowadays, most young people publicize their email accounts; possibly

they use email to exchange work. Finally, the majority of students polled have an unfavorable

impression of advertising on social networking networks. Because social media advertising

does not always offer what people anticipate. One study by the Department of Communication

Studies of the University of Antwerp, Belgium found that individual differences in chronic

regulatory focus (with a focus on prevention and promotion) among adolescents influenced

how they rated targeted advertising. spend on social networking sites. Adolescents with a

promotion focus (who are oriented towards achieving positive outcomes) have a more positive

attitude and a higher purchase intention towards targeted advertising.

11
The fact that only 52 students replied to the questionnaire was a serious constraint in this

study; hence, the data is not representative of all WSU students. Another plausible explanation

is that respondents misunderstood the questions.
