In the figure, A(0 ; 9), B(11 ; 9) and C(13 ; 1) are the vertices of ∆ABC with altitude CD.

1.1 Write down the equation of the line AB. (1)

1.3 Determine the co-ordinates of D. (2)

1.4 Calculate the area of ∆ABC. (3)

1.5 Determine the co-ordinates of M, the midpoint of AC. (2)

1.6 Hence, determine the equation of the perpendicular bisector of AC. (4)

1.7 Does the perpendicular bisector in QUESTION 1.6 pass through point B or not?

The length of the radius of the circle with equation: x 2 − 2 x + y 2 + 4 y = a is 5 units.

2.2 Write down the coordinates of the centre M of the circle. (2)

2.3 A(x ; y), with y > 0, is one of the points of intersection of the circle and the straight
line x = 4. Determine the values of x and y. (4)

2.4 Determine the equation of the tangent to the circle at the point A. (4)

2.5 Determine whether the point T(–1 ; –2) lies inside or outside the circle. (3)

2.6 If the circle is translated 3 units to the left and 1 unit up, determine the equation of
the new circle. (3)
