For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the English for Academic and Professional Purposes Alternative Delivery Mode
(ADM) Module on Identifying the Thesis Statement.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators from public
institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards
set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic
constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning
activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the
needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances.

(ADM) Module on Identifying the Thesis Statement.

In dealing with academic texts, it is really important for you to know the main idea or the central
argument of the text you are reading. This will give you an overview of the author’s opinion
and attitude towards the topic – this is the Thesis Statement.

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for guided
and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process the
contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

What I Need to Know

This module will assist you in encouraging the learners to realize the
importance of knowing and identifying the thesis statement in reading and writing
academic texts.
Please help the learners in sharing their ideas and knowledge from their
experiences so that there will be collaboration and learning will be easy.
Answers are written at the back of this module. Inculcate to the learners the
value of honesty while answering this module.

Aside from familiarizing yourself with various text structures, and summarizing
techniques, our venture into academic writing does not end there.
It is also very significant for you to master the skills of identifying and stating the
thesis statement of an academic text.

1. Define Thesis statement.
2. Identify the rules in writing and identifying the thesis statement.
3. Evaluating the correctness and appropriateness of a thesis statement.
4. Write a thesis statement.

What I Know

Tell whether each of the following sentences is a GOOD or BAD thesis


statement. Write your answers in your notebook.
1. Twelfth-grade students are busy.
2. Today's movies do not have the emotional impact of the classic horror movies of
the 1940s.
3. The life of a typical grade 12 student is challenging due to the need to succeed in
extra-curricular activities.
4. The first mountaineering attempt can challenge a person both in body and spirit.
5. Students should help others who are less fortunate.
6. Popular music is the best music ever.
7. Many people do not like watching violent horror movies.
8. I enjoy mountaineering.
9. Community service projects include building shelter for the homeless, servicing
meals to the hungry, providing transportation for the sick, distributing clothes, and
a large number of other helpful activities.
10. Although many people find rap music offensive, it has had a positive impact on
today’s youth.

In the first three modules of this quarter, you have been exposed to various
academic texts, and in every text you read and/or write, it should have a main point, a
main idea, or central message. The argument(s) presented in the paper should reflect
this main idea. The sentence that captures your position on this main idea is what we
call a thesis statement.

What’s In

Reviewing the summarizing techniques, identify the the truthfulness of the


following statements.. Put a check mark (✓) if the statement is TRUE and cross () if
it is FALSE. Write your answers on a sheet of paper.

1. A summary should be arranged according to how we understand and remember


the original material.
2. An idea heading format starts with the summary before the citation.
3. Date heading format starts with the summary before the date the summary was
made.
4. If we were given a task sheet, we can encircle the key ideas and details.
5. In summarizing, we will know the reason after we read the original material.
6. Summarizing is stating what happened in less words.
7. When we connect the bulleted information using our own words, we can go back
to the original material to make sure we are not wrong.
8. When we read closely for details, we need to memorize the details we encounter.
9. When we summarize, we need to write by number in order to arrange the events.
10. Writing a summary should include all details in the original material.

What is It

Almost all of us—even if we don’t do it intentionally, —search early in an essay


for one or two sentences summarizing the argument or analysis that is to follow. We
refer to that summarizing sentence as a thesis statement.

A thesis statement is the main idea of an essay. It is often a point you want to
argue or support in an essay.

Moreover, the thesis statement explains to a reader the main idea of the essay
and the writer's opinion on that idea. It is usually one sentence and often placed in the
introductory paragraph of an essay.
A thesis statement is a claim that could be argued. The essay will contain
evidences and opinions that support the argument.

Thesis statements avoid the following:


 the first person (I believe, In my opinion, etc.)
 unclear language (It seems, etc.)
 attempting two topics at once (even if they seem related). Pick one and stick
with it.
 just stating a fact - A thesis is something you plan to make an argument about.

A thesis statement should:


✓ contain a topic (main idea of what you are writing about)
✓ contain an opinion about the topic (what your attitude is toward the topic)

Process in WRITING a THESIS STATEMENT

Step 1: TOPIC. State the topic under consideration. (E.g. cats)

Step 2: ISSUE. State the specific issue in the form of a debating proposition (for
something). The issue usually answers the question “what?” What about cats? (E.g.
Cats should be subject to leash laws.)
Step 3: POSITION + RATIONALE (because clause). Your topic and issue = your
position. Now, using a because-clause, e.g. Cats should be subject to leash laws
because they are natural wanderers.

TIPS FOR WRITING YOUR THESIS STATEMENT

1. Determine what kind of paper you are writing:


▪ An analytical paper breaks down an issue or an idea into its component parts,
evaluates the issue or idea, and presents this breakdown and evaluation to
the audience.
▪ An expository (explanatory) paper explains something to the audience.
▪ An argumentative paper makes a claim about a topic and justifies this claim
with specific evidence. The claim could be an opinion, a policy proposal, an
evaluation, a cause-and-effect statement, or an interpretation. The goal of the
argumentative paper is to convince the audience that the claim is true based
on the evidence provided.
If you are writing a text that does not fall under these three categories
(e.g., a narrative), a thesis statement somewhere in the first paragraph could still
be helpful to your reader.
2. Your thesis statement should be specific—it should cover only what you will
discuss in your paper and should be supported with specific evidence.
3. The thesis statement usually appears at the end of the first paragraph of a paper.
4. Your topic may change as you write, so you may need to revise your thesis
statement to reflect exactly what you have discussed in the paper.

Read the following sentences. As you read complete the following tasks:

have completed the topic sentences, write one thesis statement that would be
appropriate for an essay on the same topic.

People with good attitudes tend to be more effective problem solvers, and team-
players which are the types of people most employers are looking for. Being able to
see the positive side of a negative situation is a valuable character trait in the
workplace. Positive thinking contributes to more productivity and workplace harmony,
whereas, someone who is negative and complains a lot could affect others with their
negativity and result in less productivity in the workplace, which is why most employers
steer clear of pessimists.

Nothing is more frustrating to an employer than someone who cuts corners or
leaves work incomplete. Employers want to hire people who are not just positive about

Passion and willingness to work hard can only offer a prospective employer so
much. Unless you can show how your experiences have helped prepare you for the
position you are interviewing for, the employers may decide to go with a candidate
who has completed the appropriate training already. It is costly and time-consuming
to train a new employee, which may make many employers hesitate before hiring less-
qualified applicants.

Academic writing is different from creative writing. The former really requires an
active and critical effort in in dealing with this text type.
After possessing the knowledge, skills, and value in text structures,
summarizing techniques and thesis statement; there is still another skill and strategy
that you need to master for you to effectively comprehend and analyze various
academic texts – it is OUTLINING.

At the end of this module, you are expected to:


1. Define outline and its uses.
2. Classify outlines according to content and format
3. Explain the outlining process and identify the components of an effective
outline.
4. Create an outline on a particular topic.

1. It is a tool used to organize written ideas about a topic or thesis into a logical
order. It arranges major topics, subtopics, and supporting details.
2. This type of outline is useful for outlining relatively simple subjects
3. An outline which uses a complete sentence for each item.
4. This outline is fitting for long papers whose individual sections can be
summarized in whole paragraphs
5. This is the most common type of outlining format which uses alphabets and
numeral combinations.
6. An outlining format which utilizes only Arabic numerals to list main points.
7. Listing all the ideas that you want to include in your paper.
8. Grouping related ideas together.
9. Arranging material in subsections from general to specific or from abstract to
concrete.
10. Creating main and sub headings.

Outlining Reading Texts in Various
5 Disciplines

Writing any academic paper and output requires a demanding effort. Aside from
reading a lot of references and related literature - summarizing them, locating the
thesis statement of each, and restating them in other words; meticulous planning is
required so that we can come up with a well-organized paper.
Just like how a teacher drafts his/her lesson plan to produce the best learning
experience for his/her learners, an architect plots and designs the blueprint prior to
construction, and how a fashion designer intelligently and creatively doodles on his/her
sketchpad visualizing a new fashion statement, a writer needs to plan first how he/she
is going to begin, develop and end his/her essay whatever text structure he/she wishes
to use.
After stating your thesis, the next stage involved in the pre-writing process is to
create an outline before you write your first draft.

What is It

Discussion of Activity 1

An outline is a map of your essay. It shows what information each section or


paragraph will contain, and in what order. Most outlines use numbers and/or bullet
points to arrange information and convey points. (George Mason University Writing
Center, 2016)

An outline of an essay can be very helpful for two reasons:


(1) an outline will help make your essay more organized. A careful plan will
help your body paragraphs stay focused on the ideas in your thesis
statement; and
(2) An outline saves time for writers. Preparing an outline can take time, but
when you are finished, you will be able to write the rough draft of your essay
more quickly than if you didn’t have an outline.
Here is an example of how a blank outline might look:

1What makes an effective leader? 2To be sure, no one characteristic or trait
defines an effective leader. 3It is true, however, that effective leaders get the
most out of employees or group members by holding them to very high
standards or expectations. 4Setting high standards increases productivity
because people tend to live up to the expectations set for them by superiors.
5This is an example of the Pygmalion effect, which works in a subtle, often

unconscious way. 6When a managerial leader believes that a group member will
succeed, the manager communicates this belief without realizing that he or she
is doing so.
7Conversely, when a leader expects a group member to fail, that person will

not usually disappoint the manager. 8The manager’s expectation of success or


failure becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. 9Thus it pays for a manager to expect
the best from employees.
