PAST SIMPLE - SPELLING RULES / REGULAR VERBS (+ -ED)

If the verb ends with -e, Hope —> hoped Smoke —> smoked Prepare —> prepared
one adds only -d

a) If the verb ends with Study —> studied Cry —> cried Try —> tried
consonant + y —>
one changes y in Play —> played Stay —> stayed !! EXEPTION !!
i+ed PAY —> paid
b) If the verb ends with SAY —> said
vowel + y —> one They look like regular
leaves it as it is + ed verbs but they are not!
Be careful!

If the verb ends with Travel —> travelled Cancel —> cancelled !! EXEPTION !!
consonant-vowel- Stop —> stopped Open —> opened
consonant —> one Shop —> shopped Visit —> visited
doubles the last Happen —> happened
consonant Listen —> listened

Pronunciation of the ending in -ed —> [t] (smoke-smoked); [d] (surprise-surprised); [id] (visit-visited; wait-waited)
