PAST SIMPLE

. We use the Past Simple to talk about


things that happened in the past.

EXAMPLES:
* I visited my grandparents yesterday.
* I went to the supermarket.
* I studied for the midterm exam last
weekend.

Ex. I/ You/ He/ She/ It/ We/ They played voleyball yesterday.
SPELLING RULES OF REGULAR VERBS:
 1) Verbs ending in one –e, add –d. dance danced
like liked
escape escaped

 2) Verbs ending in a consonant + y, we eliminate the “y” and add


-ied
 try tried
carry carried

BUT, vowel and y,


add only -ed play v played
enjoy enjoyed
 3)Verbs ending in a consonant+vowel + consonant, the
consonant is repeated before –ed. only if the verb finishes
with a stressed vowel
stop stopped
plan planned
prefer preferred

No stressed vowel, only -ed


answer answered
remember remembered
 The rest of the verbs take only –ed

watch watched
wash washed
start started
jump jumped
kill killed
look looked
