The hospitality industry encompasses a wide range of services and activities such as lodging,
restaurants, food services, and convention centers. The lodging sector consists of hotels, motels, resorts,
and bed and breakfasts. As such, this module focuses not only on the business but more in customers,
services and lodging industry. It elaborates on how the lodging industry has been a huge part of our
industry today and the evolution of its structure, types and popularity.

History of Hospitality Industry

Middle Age
It starts with the question, “why do people
travel”? Way back then people does travel because they
want to spread the words of God. In Greece, hospitality
was provided by certain elements of religion,
missionaries and pilgrims formed a huge part of traveling

Missionaries travel through night and day by the use of camels as their transportation.

In this era it was considered as the intermingling of religion and hospitality. Charlemagne came into the
picture and introduced a law setting out the duty of Christian travelers. Taverns have been their resting
place during those times they need a place to rest during night time

In this period, the innkeepers of the city incorporated a guild for the purpose of turning hospitality into
business.

Hostels- term used for accommodations of lesser quality


Hostelers- Guest who stay at hostels

COLONIAL PERIOD

• Coach inns were built along routes primarily at points


where teams of horses were changed

• Pubic coach service was put into effect around 1650.


The coaches transport people between major cities and
stopped whenever passengers wanted to.

18th Century
Railroads were built and had a great
influence on hotel industry in 18th
century. Depot hotels began to arise.
Most of the hotel was connected
directly to the train station. Bellhop was
formerly known as the “rotunda man”
during that time.

19th Century
These were introduced to hospitality
industry to spice up and to provide
more services such as mineral springs
or pools that are believed to be
medicinal or termed as spa. One of the
famous spa in “Baden- Baden,
Germany”.

20th Century
“A bed with a bath for a dollar and a
half” has been the motto that leads the
hotel to twentieth century.

Through the development of


technologies and systems, people nowadays
travel for various reasons depending on their
need.

It can be for business, education purposes, discovering culture from different countries, seeking for
health medication, adventure and even for leisure and relaxation. Even the industry today has changed a
lot because it is diverse and offers more services to meet the satisfactions of the guest and even alternative
accommodations.

Campgrounds – it is a place used for


overnight stay in an outdoor area usually
by use of tents as a small exciting lodging
accommodation.

Ryokans- are lodging accommodation of


Japanese usually built for four to six bunk
beds.

Capsule hotel- A capsule hotel, also known in the Western world as a pod hotel, is a type of hotel
developed in Japan that features many small bed-sized rooms known as capsule.

The Manila Hotel is a 570-room, historic


five-star hotel located along Manila Bay in
Manila, Philippines

(Formerly known as Solaire Manila) is a


resort and casino in Entertainment City, a
massive complex built along the Bay City
area of Parañaque, in Metro Manila,
Philippines by way of a proclamation for
tourism by H.E. President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo

Diamond Hotel is known as the “jewel by the


bay” for it set against the magnificent golden
sunset of the Manila Bay. A 5-star hotel
minutes away from the airport, convention
centers, cultural sites, historical landmarks
and shopping destinations.

Center, Mandaluyong, Philippines and one
of the three hotels managed by Shangri-La
Hotels and Resorts located in Metro
Manila, Philippines. It opened on August
28, 1992. The hotel has 632 rooms and
suites, four international restaurants, two
lounges, a cafe, and a bakeshop, across
two wings, and is considered a city resort.
