What’s New/What is it

Let us learn more about fabric characteristics of Southeast Asia!

(Adapted from: Music and Arts of Asia Learner’s Module 2013)

Thailand, Cambodia and Laos

Did you know that Thai weavers raised caterpillars on a steady diet of mulberry leaves so they
can produce Thai silk? Thai silk is produced cocoons of Thai silkworms. Thai silk making is its
finest arts because of the unique manufacturing process and bearing unique patterns and
colors.

Cambodian textiles used natural dyes coming from insect nest -RED DYE, indigo – BLUE
DYE, prohut bark -YELLOW AND GREEN DYE and ebony bark -BLACK DYE. They use Ikat
technique and uneven twill from weaving. Ikat technique is to create patterns by tying and
dying the portions of the yarn before weaving begins. Uneven twill produces single of two-
colored fabrics.

Cambodian silk is sold domestically, where it is used as sampot (wrap skirts), furnishings, and
pidan (pictorial tapestries).Cambodia is also known for cotton textiles which are homemade
by rural women and is used as garments and for household purposes.

In Laos, only weaver can interpret the story of their textile designs. The stories are greatly
seen in Sihn—the Lao women’s ankle-long skirt. It is interesting to note that the Lao women
weave their own Sihn that they can wear for their lifetime. Lao textiles can be determined with
its inanimate and animate wool designs – crabs, snakes, butterflies, birds, and others.

Vietnam

Golden thread silks were born in Vietnam and they used patterns containing centuries-old
symbols and characters.

Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore,

Famous batik making in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore has been taught for over a
thousand years. Batik refers to the process of dyeing the fabric by making use of resist
technique: covering areas of cloth with a dye-resistant substance to prevent them from
absorbing colors. There are two categories of Batik designs, geometric and free form designs.
Batik can also be hand-painted, or block painted.

Malaysian Batik is famous for its geometric designs or spirals. Leaves and flowers are also
incorporated in the designs. The term batik is a related to Malay word titik, which means
“point”, “dot”, or “drop”.

In Singapore, batik is featured as the uniform of flight attendants for the official flag of their
carrier airlines.

Interesting facts about Southeast Asian Sculptures

Cambodia's best-known stone carving adorns the temples of Angkor, which are "renowned
for the scale, richness and detail of their sculpture". The art of stone carving became rare,
largely because older sculptures survived undamaged for centuries (eliminating the need for
replacements) and because of the use of cement molds for modern temple architecture
(Cambodian art, n.d.).
Wat Pho is one of Bangkok's oldest temples. It existed before Bangkok was established as
the capital by King Rama (Wat Pho, n.d.).
Vietnamese art has a long and rich history, the earliest examples of which date back as far as
the Stone Age around 8,000 BCE (Vietnamese art, n.d.). The origins of Dong Son culture may
be traced back to ancient bronze castings (Dong Son culture, n.d.).
Indonesian ancestors made carvings on stone axes, forging clay and other materials with very
simple motifs and workmanship. The materials used are clay, stone, wood, bamboo, leather,
and animal horns. Motives are still geometrically shaped lines, dots, and arches. Carving art
began to develop in the bronze age in the year 500 to 300 BC and they already used bronze,
gold, and silver. They are even familiar with casting techniques and have varied motives.
(Adapted from: Music and Arts Learner’s Module,2013)

Porta De Santiago (A Famosa) which translates to 'The Famous' in Portuguese is one of the
few oldest surviving remnants of European architecture in the whole of Asia. It was built in
1511 under the command of Alfonso de Albuquerque (Cited From: "A Famosa - Wikipedia."
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Famosa).

The Merlion is the official mascot of Singapore, depicted as a mythical creature with a lion's
head and the body of a fish (Merlion, n.d.).
