i
DECLARATION
I declare that the content of this proposal is my own original work through the skills acquired
during my course study. It has never been presented to any Kenya national examination
council (KNEC) or any other institution of higher learning for award.

ii
DEDICATION
I dedicate this proposal to all my family members especially my father, mother, brother,
sisters and not forgetting aunts for their encouragement, moral and financial support towards
my research and writing of this proposal.

iii
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I owe special tribute to all my tutors who played a big role in shaping my career for three
years in the college. Special thanks to Mr. Casmir Kevin, Mr. Peter Ouma, Madam Jelia
Ayora, Mr. Kebati and most importantly Mr. Zedekiah Ongeri my project supervisor for his
guidance.

Also, I want to thank my fellow classmates among them Alison, Nelson, Steve, Akeyo, and
Leonard. Special tribute to Erick and Debora whom we’ve shared gladness and sorrow during
the project and the whole 3year course.

Lastly and most importantly I want to thank the Kisii Nation Polytechnic Building and civil
engineering department for the effort they put to ensure that we got the best teaching staff and
equipment and materials for studies.

iv
ABSTRACT
The inclusion of various disciplines in college in my project is good experiences that instil
competence in me. Such disciplines as; survey, measurement and estimation. The result of the
study will help in the field. The path from notice board was created for the students to find a
shorter route b to gate B. the pathe passes along the new shades built near the students toilets
and behind the classes in clock G and H.

The path was constructed in the year 2020 and wants to improve it.

The path is 100m from gate b to the notice board and so makes it easy for the students from
that way make it quick to classes. It was first constructed by the management under the
school authority and they built it using the first course of murram. I want to improve it by
building cabros and making it much accessible in order to avoid the mud when it rains.

The cabros will also make an aesthetic value in the school compound , the path hence
reducing the congestion of students in the main gate a while exiting home.

v
CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION
The proposed road is located in Kisii National Polytechnic. The starts from the collage
NOTICE BOARD, runs across the FIRE ASSEMBLY point towards the schools’ new
playground and the proceeds to the UPPER GATE of the collage (GATE B). The road is
under the maintenance of the Kisii National Polytechnic administration. It’s also classified
under the TVET programme.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The road from the school notice board to gate B via the school playground was proposed and
started in the year 2020by the school administration. This project is being written by
BOFACE SIRA JARED to satisfy my interest in making the road more modern and efficient
for use and effective to the school.

Since this isn’t the first phase of the road, I’m working to better the road to an advanced form
from a marram to cabro surface due to the regions climatic conditions.

I have been doing research over this project and with the school’s budget, I will prefer
carbros surface rather than using bitumen surface because it’s cheaper and the maintenance
cost is low.

JUSTIFICATION

 The NOTICE BOARD TO GATE B VIA KISII NATIONAL POLYTECHNIC

PLAYGROUND road will provide easy access to the school’s new playground field and
upper gate for exit.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

 The main problem at Kisii national polytechnic is muddy during rainy seasons and also
the road is narrow.

MAIN OBJECTIVE
Upgrading the road from murram road to cabros

vi
OTHER OBJETIVES

 The road will improve aesthetic in the compound hence reduce mud in the polytechnic
compound due high heavy rainy seasons in the region.
 The road will provide access to the new classroom shades (SHADE 1-5), schools new
driving school compound (ONOING CONSTRUCTION), the school garden and the school
hotel square

RESEARCH QUESTIONS
 What is the soil bearing capacity of the area?
 Is the ground appropriate or convenient for the construction of the road?
 What will be the cost of constructing the road?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROPOSAL

This project will also include civil engineering students during construction to improve their
skills

CONCLUSION
The proposed project will ensure during construction that all regulations from ministry of
roads are carefully followed.
