Explanation of Tanween Rule with Two Vowel-less Letters

Letters in Arabic carry vowels to tell you how to pronounce them.

Vowels can be short (a-i-u) or long (aa-ee-oo).

The ends of words can have tanween (nunation) (an-in-un)

The letter can also be vowelless (no vowel) where it carries a sukoon (ۡ).
Letters can also be doubled with a shaddah (ّ )

Some letters are silent ( ‫ ) ﹾا‬with a little round circle on the letter.

Hamzatul Wasl ( ‫ ) ٱ‬is a hamzah which is pronounced when starting on that word (the vowels
used depends upon the grammar rules and need to be learned). It is not pronounced in
continuous reading where it is joined to the word before it, in which case it is ‘dropped’. The
symbol is the head of the letter saad ( ‫ )ص‬without the tail, sitting on an alif.

Tanween plus Vowelless Letter after Hamzatul Wasl

If two letters are both vowelless then the first letter has to change and become vowelled.
This depends upon the grammar rules.

If the end of one word ends in tanween (an-in-un) and the second word starts with a
hamzatul wasl this makes two vowelless letters. In this case the sound of the noon which is
vowelless changes to a noon with a kasra (ni) sound. This reading rule is not written in the
Madeenah Mushaf.

However, you will find a subscript small noon with kasra under it in the Indo-Pak Majeedi
Mushaf. This can sometimes confuse people and they sometimes begin the hamzatul wasl
with a noon which is incorrect and also adds an extra letter to the Qur’aan.
