Facility Planning

(Location and Layout)

Facility Layout

2
Facility layout

 Consider the problem of finding suitable locations for machines,

workstations, storage areas and aisles within a plant.

 The layout problem may also occur in other places such as grocery
stores, hospitals, airports, etc. 3
Objectives of Facility layout

 A facility layout problem may have many objectives. In the

context of manufacturing plants, minimizing material
handling costs is the most common one.

 Other objectives include efficient utilization of

 space
 labor

 Eliminate
 bottlenecks
 waste or redundant movement
4
Objectives of Facility layout

 Facilitate
 organization structure
 communication and interaction between workers
 manufacturing process
 visual control
 Minimize
 manufacturing cycle time or customer flow time
 investment
 Provide
 convenience, safety and comfort of the employees
 flexibility to adapt to changing conditions
5
Material flow system
If the flow of materials, parts, and
supplies within a manufacturing
facility is to be the subject of the flow
process, the process is called the material
flow system.

Product Layout

 This layout that uses standardized processing operations to achieve smooth,

rapid, high-volume flow

 Product layouts arrange this standardized tasks in a line according to the

sequence of operations that need to be performed to assemble a
particular product

9
Fixed Position Layout

 Fixed-Position layouts are layouts used in projects in which the product is

too fragile, bulky, or heavy to move e.g. ships, houses, aircraft

 Equipment, material, and workers are brought to the production site

 The workers on such job sites are highly skilled at performing the
special tasks that they are requested to do

13
Process Layout

 It is a layout that groups similar

activities together in
departments of work centers
according to the process or
function that they perform.

 The operations of each work center

could serve different customers
different needs.

Activity relationship chart

 An activity
relationship chart
(ARC) is a tabular means
of displaying the
closeness rating among
all pairs of activities or
departments.

 In an ARC there are six

closeness ratings
which may be assigned
to each pair of
departments
