03. Phase Electricity

WHAT IS PHASE IN
ELECTRICITY?
A phase is a current or voltage that exist in
a neutral wire or cable. In many cases, the phase
produces an electrical signal in a waveform. The
waveform is interrupted by an oscilloscope,
where the phase is determined by the load it
distributes.
WHAT IS SINGLE-PHASE
ELECTRICITY?
This type of power is also known as residential voltage. With single-phase
power supply, the AC power voltage is charged simultaneously, and it does the
transformation with a coordinated system.

There are two wires: neutral and phase, that can dispense the power. In some
cases, the phase wire is known as a live or hot wire. The neutral wire creates a
pathway for returning currents while the phase wire will distribute the current
power load.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

• It has a lower power • Tend to have a shorter

transmission lifespan
• Perfect for powering up • You will need additional
most appliances circuitry
• Supplies power in a simple • Cannot run heavy power
manner loads
WHAT IS THREE-PHASE
ELECTRICITY?
A three-phase power supply features three
different power wires that provide electricity with an
alternating current. The phase wires are all mounted on a
motor, and they produce three sine waves of voltage.

There are two types of configurations in a three-

phase power supply: delta and star. There is no need for a
neutral wire with a delta configuration, and this connection is
the best recommendation for a high voltage system.
Meanwhile, the star configuration may or may not use a
neutral wire. In all configurations of the star, you will need a
ground wire.
ADVANTAGES DISADVANTAGES

• It can convert about 97% of • Not available in all

electrical energy into locations.
mechanical energy. • Price is a significant factor
• There is a non-turbulent and
continuous flow of power.
• Economical and easy to
manage.
SINGLE- PHASE VS. THREE-
PHASE: WHAT’S THE
DIFFERENCE?
SINGLE-PHASE POWER SUPPLY

➢ Preferred for small-scale electronics and appliances

➢ Has constant power dips and peaks for inconsistent power delivery
➢ Neutral wire acts as a pathway for power loads
➢ Inefficient
➢ Costly
THREE-PHASE POWER SUPPLY

➢ Can handle larger loads, especially for industrial motors

➢ Uses three conductors, ensuring steady and consistent power deliver
➢ A neutral wire is not necessary
➢ More efficient with a high level of power transfer capability with a
power voltage supply of 450V
➢ Expensive to buy
