Thermodynamics 1 – Reporting

Group 1: Heat and Entropy

Heat and Entropy

Heat – is defined as the form of energy that is transferred between two systems by virtue of a
temperature difference.
Entropy – the degree of randomness and disorder in the system.

Sensible Heat and Latent Heat

Sensible Heat – the amount of heat required to change the temperature without a change in state
of the substance.
Latent Heat – the amount of heat required to change the state and phase of the substance without
a change in temperature.

Specific Heat
Specific Heat – is defined as the quantity of heat required to change the temperature of unit mass
through one degree.

Q = mCΔT
o Problem 1:
How much energy, in Joules, is released when 650.6g of iron metal is cooled from 456oC to
22oC? CFe= 0.444 J/g oC

o Problem 2:
It takes 30 cal. of energy to heat a 13.6 g sample of an unknown metal from 18oC to 49oC.
Determine the specific heat capacity of the metal.

Constant Volume Specific Heat (Cv)

Qv = mCVΔT
Constant Pressure Specific Heat (CP)

QP = mCPΔT

For a certain ideal gas R = 25.8 ft. lb. / lb. R and K = 1.09;
a. What are the values of CP and CV?
b. What mass of this gas would occupy a volume of 15 cu.ft. at 75 psia and 80oF?
c. If 30 BTU are transferred to this gas at constant volume in (lb.), what are the resulting
temperature and pressure?
