In chemistry, the oxidation state, or oxidation number, is the

hypothetical charge of an atom if all of its bonds to different Tools and Materials
atoms were fully ionic. It describes the degree of oxidation
(loss of electrons) of an atom in a chemical compound.
Conceptually, the oxidation state may be positive, negative
or zero. While fully ionic bonds are not found in nature, many
bonds exhibit strong ionicity, making oxidation state a useful
predictor of charge.
Manganese is a chemical element with the symbol Mn and
atomic number 25. It is a hard, brittle, silvery metal, often
found in minerals in combination with iron. Manganese is a
transition metal with a multifaceted array of industrial alloy
uses, particularly in stainless steels.
Common oxidation states of manganese are +2, +3, +4, +6,
and +7, although all oxidation states from −3 to +7 have been
observed. Manganese in oxidation state +7 is represented by
salts of the intensely purple permanganate anion MnO4−.
Potassium permanganate is a commonly used laboratory
reagent because of its oxidizing properties; it is used as a
topical medicine (for example, in the treatment of fish
diseases).

The purpose
of the experiment is to know about oxidation states of
Manganese based on the discoloration.

The experimental results show the color of solution which Figure 2. Making of potasium permanganate solution
was inially purple turns green and ends with a yellowish
brown color. The change color that occurs indicates a
change in the oxidation states of Manganese. When it is
purple, Manganese has oxidation state of +7, in strong base
solution it will be reduced to green with an oxidation state
of +6, and to +4 when it is yellowish brown.
