Answer

a)
External disturbances:
For the system shown above, the disturbances could be friction of inlet
outlet pipes, unwanted variations in flow rates of the different streams,
environmental conditions such as temperature and pressure etc.
Control objectives:
The control objectives of the process would be the following:

Maintain the liquid levels of both the tanks at the desired set point.

To meet the demand of the chemical product.

To ensure the safety and avoid hazards due to chemical liquid.

Measurements:
The measured variables for the system will be liquid level of tank 1 and
tank 2 and also the demand of the liquid chemical in the market.
Manipulated variables:
The manipulated variables are the one which we can adjust accordingly,
to maintain the process at set points. Here those variables will be inlet
flow rates of supply streams and stream entering tank 2
b)
The alternative feedback control configuration for the sytem is shown
below
c) The situation of valve failure will lead to the overflow of the system if
supply is continuously maintained. Not only valve failure but sensors
and controller sensor failure may also result to the overflow of the
tanks. If the effect of external disturbances are not mitigated , this may
also lead to overflow of the system tanks.
