Composition and Notation Software Lesson Plan

Objectives:
1. Students will create short 4 measure compositions.
2. Students will learn how to use notation software.

Standards
The student will demonstrate music literacy.
A. Identify, define, and use basic standard and instrument specific notation for
pitch, rhythm, meter, articulation, dynamics, and other elements of music.
B. Notate student-created compositions using standard notation.
C. Sing selected lines from music being studied.
The student will create music as a means of individual expression.
A. Compose a four-measure rhythmic-melodic variation.

Materials
1. Laptops/Chromebooks
○ Possibly school provided for all students or possibly provided from a cart
depending on the school system.
2. Instruments

Procedure

5 mins Have students get out instruments and laptops and sit down

5 mins Introduce concept of composition


● “Can you name any composers?”

10 mins Demonstrate how to compose a four bar phrase.


● Teacher does one measure
● Call students up to do 1 measure at a time with help and guidance
from teacher

5 mins Introduce notation software and the basics of how to use it

15 mins Have students create compositions and notate them using software
● Teacher will float around room helping each student as necessary

5 mins Have students pack up instruments and inform them that students who
want to share their compositions are welcome to do so next class.
