inay potentially be of value someday, but whether the theory is capable of generating a research

agenda with studies that can be replicated and with findings that are ultimately of broader value

and applicability. Building a research agenda is important, and is not a trivial guestion. This is 2

field that has limited resources — the research that is done should count and be of value to the

development of the fckl.

“Tiwughout this paper, the importance of reading prior work in CALL has been emphasised

#epeatediy. With limited resources, it is inereasingly important that we make our research count,

both in contributing to the discipline and in making a real difference in the world. With the

dormer, it is imperative to build upon past work. This may involve replication of a prior research

study (Chun 2012: Smith and Sehulze 2013) to validate prior findings as much as it may bea

new study. We ako need to make a difference in the world. By this, I mean we need to think

carefully about research Studies that fally incorporate contexmual factors into their designs such

that there may be a well-informed response to the complexities and realities of CALL in actual

practice. These complesitics of practice need to be accounted for because they ofen make 2

difference in terms of the initial level of acceptance of CALL by teacher, students and admin-

istraton, and they help us better understand the necessary reguirements for sustainability of use

Over time. They aho help guard against CALL becoming overly dependent upon the lone oper-

aor', that is the knowledgeable and committed language teacher around whom CALL practice

ina particular sehool tends t0 revolve — such hat when this key individual leaves the institution

CALL practice ceases t09. CALL research should remain connected to understanding the use of

new technologics in the midst of day-to-day concerns of teacher and students learning another
language.
