- Wash hands
- Assemble the equipment
- Explain the procedure to the client
- Place the client in semi-fowler’s position
- Remove the nebulizer cup from the device and open it. Place the amount of
medication and dilution as ordered
- Screw the top portion of the nebulizer cup back in place and attach the cup
of the nebulizer. Attach one end of tubing to the stem of the bottom of the
nebulizer cuff and other end to the air compressor.
- Turn the air compressor or the oxygen. Check that a fine medication mist is
produced. Place mouthpiece into the patient’s mouth and instruct to grasp
securely with teeth and lips.
- Instruct the patient to inhale slowly through the mouth. Hold each breath
for 5-10 seconds or as long as possible before exhaling
- Continue this inhalation technique until all medication in the nebulizer cup
has been aerolized (usually about 15 min).
- If desired, the patient can gargle with tap water after using the nebulizer.
- Thoroughly clean the equipment in warm water and allow to air dry in a
clean towel. Perform hand hygiene.
- Document the patient respiratory rate, oxygen saturation and lung sounds
