Foreword
At various stages during the manufacture of pressed components, problems arise (e.g. tolerances
being exceeded) which might consequently increase the costs involved.
These problems have any of the following causes:
- No datum system/no datum planes specified, giving rise to different interpretations of toler-
ances;
- Design of pressed components is unfavorable;
- Design of tools is unfavorable.
Possible consequences are that the components in question do not perform their functions reliably
and are unsuitable for joining purposes. This in turn might cause disagreement with the manufac-
turer, necessitate expensive operations such as recalibration or tool modification, or entail failure to
comply with launching schedules together with associated costs.
In the case of CAD-defined components, the coordinate values are based on the datum, and the
tolerance standards currently used are unsuitable. Therefore, the subcommittee "Bodyshell" has
defined the general tolerances and documentation and representation in manufacturing documents.
The objective of this Standard is to provide functionally and technically appropriate tolerances for
use at the beginning of the development or manufacturing process.
Changes
In comparison with version 2008-02, the following changes have been made:
- Editorial revision of Section 8.2
- In Annex B, tabular overview for CATIA-V4 and CATIA-V5, indication for datum targets adapted
conforming to CATIA release.
NOTE: No guarantee can be given in respect of this translation. In all cases the latest Ger-
man-language version of this Standard shall be taken as authoritative.

1 Scope
This Standard is intended to ensure the quality and economic viability of pressed components within the
Mercedes-Benz vehicle business. The defined tolerance types and values are based on evaluated quality
assurance test reports and experience-based values of the tool and pressed component manufacturers.
The specifications contained in this Standard apply to all those involved along the process chain.
Where smaller tolerance values are required for functional, production or aesthetic reasons or larger toler-
ances are permissible and economically viable, these shall be indicated separately.
The general tolerances specified in this Standard apply to pressed metal components whose thickness
does not exceed 3 mm. They apply to all parts of these components for which no other tolerances have
been specified, where this Standard is referenced on drawings, data records (3D-Master) or in relevant
documents (e.g. terms of delivery). On account of the geometrical tolerances, the recorded dimensions
are theoretical dimensions. Contrary to DIN ISO 1101, they are not enclosed.
The application of the surface profile tolerance refers in principle to the function side of the part.

and runout; generalities, definitions, symbols on drawings
4 Basic Points
In most technological fields, tolerances depend on the nominal dimensions, e.g. the international series of
tolerances for fits, DIN EN ISO 2768, MBN DIN 6930. These specifications are based on the assumption
that for larger nominal dimensions, larger tolerance values are also required for comparable degrees of
production complexity and costs.
Tool manufacturers have become accustomed to requirements for pressed components which include
practically no provision for different tolerance values for small and large nominal dimensions. As the as-
semblies are sometimes highly complicated and as a multitude of installation conditions exists, an investi-
gation of tolerances is normally required. This applies, in particular, to all joining areas. Where these gen-
eral tolerances do not satisfy requirements, the tolerance type and value shall be entered directly.
All values are indicated in mm.
5 Surface Tolerances
For surfaces where no other tolerances are given, a surface profile tolerance with a tolerance value t = 1
applies.
1 X Y Z
Sphere Ø t = 1
The areas near the connecting surfaces (e.g. welded joints) of two pressed components are described in
terms of identical coordinates. This means that general surface profile tolerances, whose tolerance zones
are "symmetrical" to the nominal forms as per DIN EN ISO 1101, are not always suitable for ensuring
functional reliability. Instead, unilateral surface profile tolerances can be used, e.g. if "hard inclusion" oc-
curs during joining.
For new designs, the relevant free-form surface must be toleranced in CATIA with the function FD&T /
FTA. The general tolerance value 0,5 without entry of the value is no longer permissible for new designs.
For a definition of the term unilateral surface profile tolerance, refer to MBN 11 011.
The areas to which unilateral surface profile tolerances apply shall be marked with the appropriate symbol
in the drawing/data record.
A1 A1-A1:
A1
1 X Y Z
Corresponding representation with CATIA-V5 :
1 U 0 X Y Z
In special cases, a displaced unilateral surface profile tolerance may also be used (for a definition, refer to
MBN 11 011). The application and values shall be indicated explicitly in the drawing/data record.
A1 A1-A1:
A1
0.5 1 X Y Z
1 U -0.5 X Y Z
6 Hole tolerances
In the case of holes produced by means of male dies and positioned in relation to the central axis, a loca-
tion tolerance of 1 applies (square tolerance zone in relation to system of coordinates or hole dimensions).
1
1 X Y Z

For new designs in CATIA, locating holes shall be toleranced with the function FD&T / FTA and provided
with a datum target.
The symbol F shall no longer be used for new designs.
For locating holes (datum features), the diameter tolerance ±0,1mm shall apply.
For locating holes (datum features) fixed in two directions in space (normally round holes), the location
tolerance 0 mm shall apply (datum hole). For locating holes fixing a component in only one direction in
space (normally elongated holes), the location tolerance 0,4 mm shall apply for the non-fixed direction in
space, and 0 mm for the fixed direction in space (square tolerance zone oriented towards the coordinate
system / dimensioning of the hole).
Note: For the physical orientation of components, refer to the "General Specifications for Body Parts“ 1.3
paragraph 2.
The hole function (e.g. paint hole, locating hole, through hole, …) is of informal character only and does
not specify tolerance values.
For holes from older drawings and data records marked with the symbol F , the following rule continues to
apply:
Locating holes are indicated by the symbol F; the diameter tolerance is ±0.1, and the location tolerance
is 0.4 (square tolerance zone in relation to system of coordinates or hole dimensions).
For cut edges – i.e. cuts such as cut-outs, contours etc. - for which no other tolerances are indicated, the
form tolerance with the tolerance value t = 2 applies. The symbol for the line tolerance shall be used for
this purpose.
2 X Y Z
For new designs, the relevant free-form surface must be toleranced in CATIA with the function FD&T /
FTA. The general tolerance value 1,0 without entry of the value is no longer permissible for new designs.
Near the connecting surfaces of two pressed components, unilateral line tolerances can be used.
For a definition of the term unilateral line tolerance, refer to MBN 11 011.
The tolerance value for pressed components as specified in this Standard is 2.0, related to the defined
datum system.
The areas to which unilateral line tolerances apply shall be marked with the appropriate symbol in the
drawing/data record with indication of the tolerance value and the datum.
9 Datum Planes
A datum system for tolerance data is to be defined. For this purpose, datum targets (points, lines, areas)
shall be indicated in accordance with MBN 11 011.
10 Burr Height
The maximum permissible burr height is 0,3 mm.
11 Free Cuts
Free cuts shall be performed with a tolerance of + 2 mm for dimensions a and b.
a b
12 Sheet Thickness
Table 1 indicates the permissible sheet metal thickness as a ratio of the coil thickness used.
The minimum sheet thickness represents local thinning as a result of forming. No thinner base material
(coil) shall be used in the place of the specified target sheet thickness.
The thickness tolerance of the coils depends on the relevant semi-finished product tolerance.
The parts must be crack free.
Note:
1) Designation in accordance with DBL 4090
HC400T is (TRIP 700)
For models created according to the “Simplified CAD drawing in accordance with VDA 4953” or 3D-Master
method, MBN 36 012 shall be entered in the Masterdata - Tech. Specifications 1 within the block “General
tolerances“.
Annex A (informative)
Treatment of Deviations
Process-related deviations caused by cracking, hollow drawing, denting and twisting may affect in particu-
lar the edges of pressed components depending on the design of the components in question, the tools
used and the intended sequence of operation.
These so-called processing defects cannot be restricted in a standard and require part-specific quality
agreements with regard to their permissible extent.
Depending on the intended functions of the components in question, the following treatment of process-
related deviations is suggested:
A Accept deviation and document by revising data and modifying drawing
B Accept deviation and document by means of "manufacturing deviation"
C Rectify deviation by means of appropriate design measures (e.g. reinforcing seams)
D Compensate for deviation by means of appropriate tool measures
E Rectify deviation by means of stress relief measures using appropriate equipment (only in the case of
soft deviations)
Process-related deviations can be minimized in advance by contacting the tool manufacturer and by en-
suring that the pressed components are designed in an appropriate way.
