1: PURPOSE

The aim of this procedure is to set out the requirements for the management and control of all
waste types on site.
This includes the identification of waste streams, separation of waste streams, the recycling of
waste material, correct disposal on site and removal of waste to appropriate waste disposal
facilities and the keeping of records

2 DEFINITIONS

Domestic/General Waste
Waste that does not pose an immediate threat to man or the environment, i.e. administrative
office waste, builders rubble, and garden waste.
This waste generally consists of plastics, glass, cardboard, tin cans, rubble, steel, etc.
Hazardous Waste

Waste that may, by circumstances of use, quantity, concentration or inherent physical, chemical
or infectious characteristics, cause ill-health or increase mortality in humans, fauna, flora, or
adversely affect the environment when improperly treated, stored, transported or disposed of.

Hazardous wastes are separated into several different categories:


 Explosives
 Flammable solids - matches; firelighters; certain batteries
 Flammable gas - aerosol canisters
 Oxidizing substances – chlorine, peroxides
 Corrosives – acids, battery acids or foreign objects
 Flammable Liquids – paints, thinners, petrol, diesel, oils and greases
 Poisons – pesticides, rat poisons
 Radioactive sources – plant mass gauges
 Medical waste – needles, swabs, and used bandages

3. IDENTIFICATION OF WASTE STREAMS:

The Environmental Management Representative shall ensure that a detailed waste inventory is
developed for sidinane secondary school project sites. The waste inventory shall indicate the
source, waste type, category of waste, disposal method and responsible contractor

Colour Coding of Waste Telecons:


Waste telecons for the removal of hazardous general and domestic waste including scrap steel
shall be colour coded in the following manner:
 BLACK BIN WITH RED BAND – HAZARDOUS WASTE
 GREEN BIN WITH WHITE BAND – DOMESTIC/GENERAL WASTE
 BLUE BIN – STEEL MATERIAL

Waste Telecons must be coulor coded as required in terms of this procedure and boards
indicating the types of waste to be disposed of placed in front of the telecons.
Waste Transfer containers must be placed on the ground in a demarcated pre – prepared space.
The Environmental Management Representative and the site Safety Officers shall ensure that
contractors take responsibility for separation of waste and general housekeeping at waste
transfer stations.

4. AWARENESS TRAINING

All personnel and contractors shall be made aware of the contents of this procedure by means
of training on site.
Safe Disposal Certificates and Waste Manifests
The Environmental Management Representative and site Safety Officers shall ensure that the
waste disposal contractor provides the Safe Disposal Certificates for waste removed off site.
The permits for waste disposal facilities shall be kept on file.
Environmental Management Representative and site Safety Officers must ensure that weigh bills
are provided with each load removed off site.

Opportunities to reduce, re-use or recycle:


The Environmental Management Representative shall ensure that a periodic review of the waste
management program is undertaken with the aim of identifying opportunities for:
 Reduction of waste generation;
 Waste recycling and treatment;
 Material substitution and process change; and
 More efficient use of materials, energy and other resources.

5. RECORDS
Records derived from the implementation of this procedure will be controlled in accordance
with the requirements as defined in Procedure.
