The mask/regulator contains an oxygen mask with a microphone,
an inflatable harness, and a diluter demand regulator.
The diluter demand regulator has three manual controls - harness
inflation, oxygen dilution control, and a PRESS TO TEST knob.
The harness inflation ears inflate and deflate the mask harness
The oxygen dilution control sets a flow of 100 percent oxygen.

Thermal Compensator
The thermal compensator is in the cylinder coupling assembly. It
has a brush-like wire element. The element absorbs heat, and the
coupling removes the heat.
Pressure Reducer
The pressure reducer attaches to the cylinder coupling. It
decreases the oxygen pressure that goes to the flight compartment. An
inlet pressure of 600 to 1850 Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) decreases
to 600 to 680 PSI. If the cylinder pressure is less than 600 PSI, the
reducer outlet pressure is the same as the cylinder pressure.
Pressure Transducer
The pressure transducer attaches to the cylinder coupling. It
measures cylinder pressure. The pressure changes to an electrical
signal and goes to Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS)
for indication.

The overboard discharge port is in the fuselage skin aft of the forward

Physical Description
A green plastic indicator disc seals the discharge port to prevent entry of
dirt and moisture. A snap ring holds the disc.
Functional Description
If oxygen pressure in a cylinder is too high, the frangible disc on that
cylinder ruptures. Oxygen blows the green disc out and then discharges
overboard. If a frangible disc ruptures, all the oxygen from that cylinder
goes overboard.
NOTE: If the green disc is missing, inspect the airplane for damage.
The usual source of high oxygen pressure is high-temperature.

The voltage averaging units for the crew and passenger systems are in
the ceiling of the forward cargo compartment above the crew oxygen
cylinders.
Physical Description
The voltage averaging unit components are in a case assembly
with one electrical connector. The electrical circuits have an
amplifier, a feedback network, and a power supply.
Functional Description
The voltage averaging unit receives inputs from the oxygen
cylinder pressure transducers. The voltage averaging unit senses
the oxygen pressure of each oxygen cylinder. It then calculates the
average pressure. The voltage averaging unit does this by averaging
the signal values from the pressure transducers against the number of
oxygen cylinders installed.
PASSENGER VOLTAGE
AVERAGING UNIT
SEE A
ELECTRICAL
CONNECTOR
VOLTAGE
AVERAGING
UNIT
Functional Description
When the cylinder valve is open, oxygen flows to a pressure transducer
and pressure reducer. The pressure transducer for each cylinder gives
an input to the voltage averaging unit. The voltage averaging unit
averages the inputs and sends that signal to the Engine Indication
and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) for crew oxygen pressure
indication.
The pressure reducer decreases the pressure of oxygen that goes to
the flight compartment. From the pressure reducer, medium
pressure oxygen goes to a pressure regulator. The oxygen pressure
decreases when it goes through the pressure regulator into the low
pressure manifold. The low pressure manifold supplies low
pressure oxygen to the mask stowage boxes. When you remove the
mask from the stowage box, oxygen starts to flow.

The SUPRNMRY OXY control switch is on the PASS
OXYGEN/YAW DAMPER panel on the P5 in the flight compartment.
Physical Description
The three position switch is spring loaded to the center position. A
black guard covers the switch to prevent accidental operation. The
switch has:
• RESET
• NORM
• ON.
Function Description
Usually the switch is in the NORM position the supernumerary
oxygen system automatically operates in the event of a cabin
decompression. When it is necessary to set the oxygen system on,
momentarily set the switch to ON. This electrically operates the Flow
Control Unit (FCU) and starts the flow of oxygen into the
supernumerary and crew rest. When the flow of oxygen is not
necessary, momentarily set the switch to RESET. This energizes a
solenoid, and stops the flow of oxygen.

General
The reset solenoid lets you reset the Flow Control Unit (FCU) with a
switch on the flight compartment. The solenoid is on a bracket
below the FCU. When the solenoid energizes, the switch bar operates
the reset lever. The lever pushes the reset plunger on the FCU. The
solenoid moves the linkage back to the initial position when it de-
energizes.

The automatic vent valve is installed in the low pressure oxygen line
near the crew oxygen cylinders in the forward cargo compartment.
Physical Description
The automatic vent valve has a spring, poppet and an orifice.
When the valve is open, the poppet opens the orifice. Pressure moves
the poppet to close the orifice.
Functional Description
The automatic vent valve is usually open. Without this, leakage through
the Flow Control Unit (FCU) can pressurize the manifold
sufficiently to cause unscheduled release of the oxygen masks. During
operation of the oxygen system, the vent valve closes when
manifold pressure goes more than 1 Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI).

Physical Description
The bleed relief valve has a spring, poppet and an orifice. When the
valve is closed, the poppet closes the orifice. The valve opens by
high pressure moving the poppet away from the orifice.
Functional Description
A bleed relief valve in the low pressure distribution manifold opens
by a pressure surge during initial operation of the oxygen system. Air
goes out of the manifold to let an immediate supply of oxygen go to the
oxygen mask modules. The valves open at approximately 27

Location
Supernumerary oxygen modules are above the seats in the upper deck.
Physical Description
The module includes a mask stowage box, unitized valve

several masks. Unused outlets have caps.
A hinge and two latches hold the oxygen module to the support. The
latches release and the oxygen module opens down for access. You put
a small tool in through the hole and push up to release the latch.
Functional Description
During the first few seconds, the flow control surge units release a
pressure surge that opens the oxygen box door. This lets the
masks drop to easy reach of the users.
When the user pulls the mask, a short cord pulls the pintle assembly
from the mask shutoff valves in the unitized valve assembly. This lets
the valve to open and oxygen to flow to the mask.
The user of the mask inhales pure oxygen until the reservoir bag

Functional Description
A pressure gauge shows cylinder pressure.
A shutoff valve controls the flow of oxygen from the cylinder to the
regulator. The regulator decreases high pressure from the cylinder to a
value for use. The outlet fittings include a flow metering device and a
check valve.
The check valve opens to let oxygen flow to the mask when the
mask plug-in adapter is inserted.
A charging valve lets you refill the cylinder.
A frangible safety plug gives overpressure protection.
