OXYGEN - GENERAL DESCRIPTION

General
The oxygen systems give oxygen to the crew and
passenger (supernumerary) during emergency decompression.

The crew oxygen system has three 115 CU (Cubic) FT (Feet)

composite oxygen cylinders and provisions for a fourth. This is for
195 minutes for class E fire fighting procedures.*

The passenger (supernumerary) oxygen system has 115 CU FT

composite oxygen cylinders installed in the right sidewall and
provisions for more oxygen cylinders in the overhead. Access panels
give access to the oxygen cylinders.

Each oxygen cylinder has a regulator assembly. A pressure transducer

on the regulator assembly sends signals to the voltage averaging
unit. The voltage averaging unit sends signals to the EFIS/EICAS
Interface Unit (EIU)s for Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System
(EICAS) indications.

You service the crew and passenger (supernumerary) oxygen cylinders

by removal and installation of filled cylinders.

* NOTE: A class E fire fighting procedure is one whereby the fire is

suppressed by depressurizing the aircraft. The aircraft altitude is set to
25,000 feet and the crew and occupants go onto oxygen. The oxygen
content in the ambient air at this altitude is too low to sustain
combustion.

CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM - CONTROLS AND INDICATIONS

General
A mask stowage box is at each crew station.
The box gives stowage for the mask/regulator and controls flow of
oxygen to the mask/regulator. The box contains a sliding control, a
shutoff valve, left and right lids, and a flow blinker.

Controls Indications

controls the shutoff valve. The left lid also moves the sliding control. The oxygen system pressure indication shows on Engine
This controls white flag to the exposed position when the Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS)
mask/regulator is removed and the left lid is closed.
Holding the sliding control in TEST lets the mask/regulator be tested
when in the stowed position. The inner part of the sliding control
has a white flag marked OXY-ON.
The mask/regulator contains an oxygen mask with a microphone,
an inflatable harness, and a diluter demand regulator.
The diluter demand regulator has three manual controls - harness
inflation, oxygen dilution control, and a PRESS TO TEST knob.

The harness inflation ears inflate and deflate the mask harness
The oxygen dilution control sets a flow of 100 percent oxygen.

The PRESS TO TEST knob has two functions.

• One, rotating the knob gives a positive flow of oxygen under
pressure. The oxygen dilution control must be at 100 percent for
this to occur.
• Two, pushing the knob lets the regulator be tested when the
mask regulator is in the mask stowage box.

CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM - OXYGEN CYLINDER - COMPONENTS

General
These are the oxygen cylinder coupling components:
• Thermal compensator
• Pressure reducer
• Pressure transducer.
• Thermal Compensator

Thermal Compensator
The thermal compensator is in the cylinder coupling assembly. It
has a brush-like wire element. The element absorbs heat, and the
coupling removes the heat.

NOTE: Obey handling procedures and safety precautions

during maintenance to prevent contamination or damage to the
thermal compensator. Contamination is possible when you
disconnect plumbing, or a cap is not on correctly.

Pressure Reducer
The pressure reducer attaches to the cylinder coupling. It
decreases the oxygen pressure that goes to the flight compartment. An
inlet pressure of 600 to 1850 Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) decreases
to 600 to 680 PSI. If the cylinder pressure is less than 600 PSI, the
reducer outlet pressure is the same as the cylinder pressure.

Pressure Transducer
The pressure transducer attaches to the cylinder coupling. It
measures cylinder pressure. The pressure changes to an electrical
signal and goes to Engine Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS)
for indication.

CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM - OVERBOARD DISCHARGE PORT INDICATOR

Purpose
The overboard discharge port indicator gives the crew a visual
indication of an oxygen cylinder pressure relief.

Location
The overboard discharge port is in the fuselage skin aft of the forward
cargo door.

Physical Description
A green plastic indicator disc seals the discharge port to prevent entry of
dirt and moisture. A snap ring holds the disc.

Functional Description
If oxygen pressure in a cylinder is too high, the frangible disc on that
cylinder ruptures. Oxygen blows the green disc out and then discharges
overboard. If a frangible disc ruptures, all the oxygen from that cylinder
goes overboard.

NOTE: If the green disc is missing, inspect the airplane for damage.
The usual source of high oxygen pressure is high-temperature.

CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM - PRESSURE REGULATOR

Purpose
In the crew oxygen system, the medium oxygen pressure goes to
the pressure regulator. The pressure regulator decreases oxygen
pressure from the pressure reducer to the mask regulator values.

Location
The pressure regulator is behind the master dim and test control
module. Access is through a panel in the outboard wall of the flight
compartment. Two fasteners hold it to the structure and thread
fittings connect the inlet and outlet lines.

Physical Description
A relief valve in the pressure regulator set to approximately 100 Pounds
Per Square Inch (PSI) gives protection to the components downstream
of the regulator.

Functional Description
The pressure regulator decreases oxygen pressure from the
intermediate pressure manifold (600-680 PSI) to 60-85 PSI.

CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM - VOLTAGE AVERAGING UNIT

Purpose
The voltage averaging unit sends signals to the indicating system.

Location
The voltage averaging units for the crew and passenger systems are in
the ceiling of the forward cargo compartment above the crew oxygen
cylinders.

Physical Description
The voltage averaging unit components are in a case assembly
with one electrical connector. The electrical circuits have an
amplifier, a feedback network, and a power supply.

Functional Description
The voltage averaging unit receives inputs from the oxygen
cylinder pressure transducers. The voltage averaging unit senses
the oxygen pressure of each oxygen cylinder. It then calculates the
average pressure. The voltage averaging unit does this by averaging
the signal values from the pressure transducers against the number of
oxygen cylinders installed.

CREW OXYGEN SYSTEM - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION

General
The crew oxygen is in high pressure cylinders. Each cylinder has
these components:
• Pressure gauge
• Shutoff valve
• Frangible disc.

The frangible disk gives overpressure protection through an

overboard discharge port. Stainless steel lines connect to all the
cylinders. A coupling with a thermal compensator connects the cylinder
to a pressure transducer and pressure reducer.

Functional Description
When the cylinder valve is open, oxygen flows to a pressure transducer
and pressure reducer. The pressure transducer for each cylinder gives
an input to the voltage averaging unit. The voltage averaging unit
averages the inputs and sends that signal to the Engine Indication
and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) for crew oxygen pressure
indication.
The pressure reducer decreases the pressure of oxygen that goes to
the flight compartment. From the pressure reducer, medium
pressure oxygen goes to a pressure regulator. The oxygen pressure
decreases when it goes through the pressure regulator into the low
pressure manifold. The low pressure manifold supplies low
pressure oxygen to the mask stowage boxes. When you remove the
mask from the stowage box, oxygen starts to flow.

PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM - GENERAL DESCRIPTION

General
The passenger (supernumerary) oxygen system is a gaseous system
that gives a continuous flow of oxygen to the mask. High-pressure
cylinders in the forward cargo compartment supply the passenger
(supernumerary) and crew oxygen systems.

When the system is on, high-pressure oxygen (1850 Pounds per

Square Inch Gauge (PSIG)) flows from each cylinder to the high-
pressure regulator for each cylinder assembly. The high-pressure
regulator decreases oxygen pressure to 600-680 PSIG in the
intermediate system.

This intermediate oxygen pressure goes to the Flow Control Unit (FCU).
The FCU controls the pressure in the low pressure distribution system.
The low pressure distribution system manifold supplies oxygen to the
oxygen service units.

Oxygen modules are in the Passenger Service Unit (PSU)s at

each seat location, lavatory, galley area and Crew Rest Area (CRA).
The low-pressure distribution system does not pressurize during
normal flight until the FCU operates.

PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM - CONTROLS AND INDICATIONS

Purpose
The SUPRNMRY OXY control switch manually controls the operation of
the supernumerary and crew rest oxygen system.

Location
The SUPRNMRY OXY control switch is on the PASS
OXYGEN/YAW DAMPER panel on the P5 in the flight compartment.

Physical Description
The three position switch is spring loaded to the center position. A
black guard covers the switch to prevent accidental operation. The
switch has:
• RESET
• NORM
• ON.

Function Description
Usually the switch is in the NORM position the supernumerary
oxygen system automatically operates in the event of a cabin
decompression. When it is necessary to set the oxygen system on,
momentarily set the switch to ON. This electrically operates the Flow

Purpose
The automatic vent valve prevents slow pressure buildup in the
low pressure distribution manifold.

Location
The automatic vent valve is installed in the low pressure oxygen line
near the crew oxygen cylinders in the forward cargo compartment.

Physical Description
The automatic vent valve has a spring, poppet and an orifice.
When the valve is open, the poppet opens the orifice. Pressure moves
the poppet to close the orifice.

Functional Description
The automatic vent valve is usually open. Without this, leakage through
the Flow Control Unit (FCU) can pressurize the manifold
sufficiently to cause unscheduled release of the oxygen masks. During
operation of the oxygen system, the vent valve closes when
manifold pressure goes more than 1 Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI).

PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM - BLEED RELIEF VALVE

Purpose
The bleed relief valve opens by a pressure surge during initial operation
of the oxygen system. This prevents over pressurization of the
oxygen distribution manifold.

Location
The bleed relief valve is installed in the low pressure oxygen
distribution manifold. You open the Passenger Service Unit (PSU) to get
access to the valve.

Physical Description
The bleed relief valve has a spring, poppet and an orifice. When the
valve is closed, the poppet closes the orifice. The valve opens by
high pressure moving the poppet away from the orifice.

Functional Description
A bleed relief valve in the low pressure distribution manifold opens
by a pressure surge during initial operation of the oxygen system. Air
goes out of the manifold to let an immediate supply of oxygen go to the
oxygen mask modules. The valves open at approximately 27
Pounds Per Square Inch (PSI) and close when pressure decreases to
approximately 24 PSI.

NOTE: To do a test of the valve in place, you pressurize the low

pressure distribution manifold to 35 PSI and listen for the escape of air
at the bleed valve. When pressure decreases to 15 PSI, the air flow
stops. To do the test, you use a regulated air pressure source
and a pressure gauge that connects to the test adapters near the
Flow Control Unit (FCU).

PASSENGER OXYGEN SYSTEM - FUNCTIONAL DESCRIPTION - 1

General
Passenger (supernumerary) oxygen is in high pressure composite After several seconds, the pressure surge decreases to let the bleed
cylinders. Each cylinder has these components: valve close. While oxygen continues to flow to the masks, pressure in
the manifold is sufficient to hold the automatic vent valve closed.
• Pressure gauge When oxygen is not necessary, the flight crew resets the FCU. This
• Shutoff valve stops the flow of oxygen to the distribution manifold. Residual
• Frangible disc. pressure in the manifold goes through the masks to let the automatic
vent valve open.
Functional Description
The frangible disc gives overpressure relief through an overboard Test fittings allow connection of an external pressure source and
discharge port and manifold used for the crew system. A coupling indicator for system tests.
with an integral thermal compensator connects the cylinder to a
pressure transducer and pressure reducer. A medium pressure
manifold lets oxygen flow from the pressure reducers to the Flow
Control Unit (FCU).
When the oxygen cylinder valve is open, oxygen flows to a
pressure transducer and pressure reducer. The pressure transducer for
each cylinder gives input to the voltage averaging unit. The voltage
averaging unit averages the inputs and sends that signal to the Engine
Indication and Crew Alerting System (EICAS) for crew pressure
indication.

When the system is off, no oxygen flows to the oxygen modules. If a

small quantity of oxygen goes through the FCU, the vent valve
releases the oxygen.

When the system starts operation, a pressure surge releases the

oxygen module doors to release the masks. The surge also closes the
automatic vent valve and opens the bleed valve. The bleed valve lets
oxygen replace air in the distribution manifold.

(PSI) and at a temperature of 70°F (21°C).
The portable oxygen cylinder assembly includes a storage
cylinder, pressure regulator and mask.

Functional Description
A pressure gauge shows cylinder pressure.
A shutoff valve controls the flow of oxygen from the cylinder to the
regulator. The regulator decreases high pressure from the cylinder to a
value for use. The outlet fittings include a flow metering device and a
check valve.
The check valve opens to let oxygen flow to the mask when the
mask plug-in adapter is inserted.
A charging valve lets you refill the cylinder.
A frangible safety plug gives overpressure protection.
