Suppose you have just been hired as a transport and logistics technician by

Fernando and María Cantarero, managers of a transport company, "L&T, S.A.".

Your mission is to collaborate with the study for the implementation of a new
section in your company dedicated to passenger transport. Exactly your task is to
calculate the fleet of vehicles you would need to have to cover a certain line. The
data they offer you are these:

* The bus fleet must transport from Seville to Algeciras 600 passengers per day,
300 one way and 300 return.
* The time spent on each trip in addition to the transfer time is 10 minutes for
passenger boarding and 10 minutes for alighting.
* Under normal conditions the travel time to Algeciras is 150 minutes and the
return trip to Seville 150 minutes.
* When the bus makes a round trip, it must fill the fuel tank and takes 30
minutes.
* Public hours are from 7:00 AM to 21:00 PM. * The average filling factor of the
buses is 80%.
. * The capacity of the buses is 40 passengers per vehicle.
* The average bus availability is 90% and utilization is 90%.

You are asked to:

1. Identifies the variables involved.

2. Identifies the necessary expressions for the calculation of the fleet.
3. Calculate the fleet.
4. Interpret the data obtained and indicate what number of buses L&T, S.A. will
need to cover the expected demand and how many times a day it will have to make
the trip.

Exercise solved:

Seville / Algeciras Q= 600 passengers ( 300 one way / 300 return )

Times: 10 minutes uphill + 10 minutes downhill ( one way )

10 minutes uphill + 10 minutes downhill ( return )

150 minutes Seville / Algeciras

150 minutes Algeciras / Seville

30 minutes to fill tank

Schedule: 7:00 AM until 21:00 PM ( 14 hours )

Filling factor α = 80%.

q= Bus capacity 40 persons

D average availability 90%

Up productive profit 90

Tc= 20+150+20+150+30= 370 minutes (to convert to hours it would be 370/60=

6.16 hours)

Ncr= Up * D * Nct

Ncr= 0.9 * 0.9 * 2.27 = 1.84 number of actual cycles

Therefore, we would need 10 buses and they would have to make two trips per day
to complete the route.
