Calibration of Weighing Balances

Objective:
To ensure accurate and reliable measurements from weighing balances by regular calibration.

Equipment and Materials:

1. Weighing balances
2. Calibration weights
3. Anti-static brush
4. Clean,lint-free cloth
5. Logbook for recording calibration data

Procedure:
1. Preparation:
a. Ensure the weighing area is clean, flat and free from vibrations.
b. The placement of weighing balance is suitable for use in relevant department.
c. Then check the bubble point, the air bubble should be centered.
d. Turn on the weighing balance and let it stabilize for at least 30 minutes.

2. Verification of Calibration Weights:

a. Check the calibration weights for any damage or deformation.
b. Verify the accuracy of calibration weights using a certified reference standard.

3. Visual Inspection:
a. Inspect the weighing balance for any physical damage or wear.
b. Check the pan and weighing chamber for cleanliness.

4. Zero-Point Calibration:
a. Place the calibration weight with the lowest mass on the center of the balance pan.
b. Press the tare or zero button to reset the balance to zero.
c. Remove the weight and ensure the balance returns to zero.

5. Calibration with Standard Weights:

a. Place a standard weight (preferably 50% of the balance capacity) on the center of the pan.
b. Record the displayed weight.
c. Repeat with different standard weights covering the full range of the balance.

6. Linearity Check:
a. Place weights incrementally, covering the full range of the balance.
b. Record displayed weights at each point.
c. Compare the displayed values with the expected values.
7. Repeatability Test:
a. Place a standard weight on the pan.
b. Remove and replace the weight several times.
c. Record the displayed values and check for consistency.

8. Documentation:
a. Record all calibration data in the logbook, including date, time, and personnel involved.
b. Note any adjustments made during calibration.

9. Adjustments (if necessary):

a. If the balance deviates from the accepted tolerance, consult the manufacturer's manual for
adjustment procedures.
b. Document any adjustments made.

10. Final Verification:

a. Repeat the zero-point calibration.
b. Verify that the balance displays zero with no load.

11. Final Documentation:

a. Sign and date the calibration log.
b. File the calibration records for future reference.

Frequency:
Perform this calibration procedure Once Annually.
