Unit 7. Correlation
Activity 8. Integrating Project, Stage 2

Instructions for Stage 2:

1. For this second stage of the Integrator Project, you will select a random sample of the population
and calculate point and interval estimates of the mean of the population prices with some
confidence,

MPORTATIONS Value Volume Price

as well as testing a hypothesis to decide on the difference between the average prices of glazed
and unglazed ceramic slabs and tiles and unglazed and unglazed ceramic slabs and tiles.

And finally, check if volume and price are correlated.

1
There is indeed a correlation between the two variables, since, as we can see in the exercise, there is a
difference between the means of these products.

2. Take what was done in Stage 1 and elaborate what is requested below for this 2nd stage, including all the
calculations and operations that apply. Develop all calculations and operations in an Excel sheet and
integrate the results; you can integrate the calculations from the Excel sheet at the end of this document,
or send both files (Excel and Word) on the Blackboard platform.

a) Calculate the possible samples of size 10 that can be obtained, without replacements from the
population of import prices for each of the ceramic slabs and tiles both glazed or glazed and unglazed
or unglazed. Select a random sample of size 10.

b) Answer the following questions:

 What is the population average price?

varnished or enameled = 20.41

unvarnished and unglazed = 11.45

 What is the best estimator of the population mean of prices?

The best estimator is based on the average of varnished or glazed slabs and tiles.

c) Determine a 95% confidence interval for the population mean of import prices of both glazed and
unglazed ceramic slabs and tiles. Interpret the confidence interval

glazed or enameled ceramic tiles and slabs

3
95% = .950/2 = .4750
20.41 +- 1.96 ( 18.36 )
√10
Z = 1.96
ɕ = 18.36
N = 10
X = 20.41
20.41 +- 1.96 ( 18.36/3.16 )
20.41 +- 1.96 ( 5.81 )
20.41 +- 11.38

20.41 + 11.38 = 31.79//

20.41 - 11.38 = 9.03//

95% = .950/2 = .4750

√10
Z = 1.96

4
ɕ = 10
N = 11.45
X = 6.19
6.19 +- 1.96 ( 11.45/3.16 )
6.19 +- 1.96 ( 3.62 )
6.19 +- 7.09

6.19 + 7.09 = 13.28//

6.19 - 7.09 = -0.90//

d) Perform a hypothesis test for the difference between the means of the prices of glazed or enameled
ceramic plates and tiles and unglazed or unglazed ceramic plates and tiles (Ho: µ1- µ2=0).
 What is the conclusion about hypothesis testing with α = 0.05?
The difference between the two types of products is relatively small as shown in the exercises,
but we can state that the prices of glazed or enameled ceramic plates and tiles are higher than
the others.

5
6
e) Take from Step 1, item "f", the third question regarding the relationship between volume and price of
ceramic tiles and construct a scatter plot, calculate Pearson's correlation coefficient and interpret the
results.

f) Answer the following questions:

 What type of ceramic tile is being imported in the largest volume?
According to the results, we can see that glazed or enameled ceramic plates and tiles are being
imported in greater numbers.
 What confidence interval should the mean of the prices be in and with what level of
confidence?
The confidence interval for glazed ceramic prices is 1.72 with a confidence level of 90%.
The confidence interval for unglazed and unglazed ceramic prices is 1.81 with a confidence level
of 90%.

 If a businessman wants to import ceramic slabs and tiles to market them in Mexico, do you
consider that this information can be useful to support his decision making, justify your
answer

7
Yes, because even though there is a variance between sales volume and costs, the products are
naturally marketed.

g) Write a conclusion on the essential elements observed and the findings of your analysis
integrating the results of the two stages.

It could be detected that there is a variant in the prices of the foreign market in relation to the volume
generated by each country, but these results are within the allowed margins or at least there is not an
abysmal difference between the competitors, in relation to the types of products.In relation to the
types of products there is also a variant in sales but I could say that it is by taste or need of each
client or consumer, not by the fact that they are varnished or enameled or none of the above.
