Reflection Notes on Unit 2 – Competing with Information Technology.

Information Technology has become an essential part of every organization and business
throughout the world today.

Everyone can access information on any matter relating to anything as long as they have the
infrastructure and connectivity of the internet to access information. IT has given businesses a
competitive advantage. However, all businesses, organizations and individuals worldwide have
access to the same information. Depending on how smart their people are, the availability of
information and the continued improvements and trends going on, scanning the business
environment and planning strategically in IT can help businesses and organizations archived their
goals and objectives.

The introduction of Michael Potters competitive forces in business in this unit has given me an
understanding of how businesses can strategize using IT to their advantage. As an employee of a
government institution, these strategies will assist me to help my organization develop strategies
using the Michael Potter framework to improve performance of the organization and better serve
the people of Papua New Guinea.

When we understand the use of IT and how best we can be able to utilize the available information
worldwide to our advantage, we can help our organizations and businesses improve in leaps and
bounds and outwit our competitors.

Individuals, businesses and organizations today rely heavily on IT, hence understanding the five
competitive forces in the marketplace and developing strategies with IT, using the available
knowledges within the organizations and businesses will help counter these forces and give
businesses and organizations a competitive advantage in today’s competitive word.

Hopefully, I can be able to make use of the five competitive forces, develop strategies to counter
these forces and support my organization to achieve a better outcome for the organization and the
people of Papua New Guinea now and into the future.
