Reflection Notes on Unit 4 – Telecommunications and Network.

I have understood that telecommunication and network are related concepts involving exchange
of information. Telecommunication involves the telephone systems, radio, television broadcasting
and satellite communication and recently internet-based communications. Whereas network is the
connecting of devices to share resources, data and information. Communication between
individuals, businesses and organizations utilizes both telecommunication and network
technologies. This unit helps me understand the telecommunication and network foundations that
support business and organizations and society at large. Using telecommunication and network
establishment has become the everyday thing and every person, business and organizations will
continue to make use of the telecommunication and networking systems to improve themselves
for the better.

I have come across acronyms such as WAN, LAN, VPN, TCP/IP, Client/Server and Peer to Peer
networks without fully understanding what they are and how they were being utilized. This unit
has once again broadened my understanding of the relationship between telecommunication and
networking and their uses in businesses and organizations. The introduction of internet technology
has open up the business world using the telecommunications and network infrastructure. Internet
is continuously developing and has crossed barriers to support businesses worldwide.

The unit gives the view and explanation on the telecommunications and network technologies and
how the worldwide web and the internet are revolutionizing the world and business today. I now
have this understanding as expressed in the e-book; “Businesses have become networked
enterprises. The Internet, the Web, and intranets and extranets are networking business processes
and employees together and connecting them to their customers, suppliers, and other business
stakeholders. Companies and workgroups can thus collaborate more creatively, manage their
business operations and resources more effectively, and compete successfully in today’s fast-
changing global economy”.

Understanding these terms and connecting them to business and organization use from this unit is
appreciated.
