is defined as a set of symbols


used to separate and clarify
the meaning of sentences and
written elements.
PUNCTUATION STYLES
Closed punctuation
-Most often use in formal texts
like reports, theses and
dissertations. It uses commas
or period after a salutation,
complimentary close, etc.

Open punctuation- more


commonly used in personal
communication. It uses no
punctuation after either the
salutation or the
complimentary close.
PUNCTUATING
ABBREVIATIONS
 Period are always used with
latin abbreviation, but not
with contraction.
 A period usually ends
abbreviation of a title or
names
of institution.

sPUNCTUATING TITLES

 Use double quotation marks


for titles of poems, essay,
short stories, painting and
other small creative works if
they are part of the sentence.
 don’t use a period after a
title or heading.
