Instructor: Eh Moo Wah
Lesson Title: Writing an Argumentative Essay
Time Needed: 35 Min
Standard: 6. WS-RW.2
- Standard 5 from the Writing Strand. Idaho State Department of Education states that the
6th grade level should be able to “write arguments that introduce and support a distinct
point of view with relevant claims, evidence and reasoning; demonstrate an
understanding of the topic; and provide a concluding section that follows from the
argument presented”.
Objectives:
- Students will be able to write a claim, then back that claim up with reasoning and
evidence.
- Students will understand the topic of writing an argumentative essay by identifying the
parts of an argumentative essay.
Materials Needed:
- Pencil
- Lined Paper
- Color pencils
- Highlighters
Discussion/PowerPoint (30 minutes):
- Follow the PowerPoint slide.
- First explain what argumentative writing is and give examples. (Apple is the best fruit
because there are many types of apples)
Activity: (10 min)
- Have students talk to their classmates and write down some of their opinion on subjects.
- These can be either from the slide or their own.
Check for Understanding:
- Have students write down what makes up an argumentative essay and turn it in to me
- Looking for the opinion/claim, then their reasoning and give a little evidence. (since this
is the first lesson, a simple “oranges are more juicer” for the evidence is fine)
