from black and Asian backgrounds reporting racial discrimination (overt abuse or

Andrews, Manchester, and King’s College London) revealed that UK is immeasurably far from
being a racially just society. 14,000 people from 21 ethnic backgrounds and all parts of the
country took part in the survey. The figures show that more than a third of ethnic minority
people in Britain have experienced some form of racist abuse.
More than 60% of Gypsy and Traveller people reported that they had experienced some form

Social Media
Online racism has more than doubled since before the referendum, to 51%, and there were
rises of about 50% in the number or people reporting hearing people ranting (despotricar) or
making negative comments about immigration or making racist comments made to sound like
jokes. [Racist content on social media has risen] The large rise in racism on social media raised
concerns about whether online channels were normalising hate and increasing division.

In 2019, Danny Baker, a BBC broadcaster, tweeted an image of a couple holding hands with a
chimpanzee dressed in a suit with the caption: "Royal Baby leaves hospital". The presenter
was accused of mocking Meghan Markle’s (Duchess of Sussex) racial heritage because her
mother is African American. Following allegations of racism, Baker apologized for using the
picture but was sacked.
