HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF BASKETBALL

Meaning of Basketball?
 is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five players each, opposing one another
on a rectangular court.

 Who is Dr. James Naismith?


 He was the Canadian-American physical educator, physician, Christian chaplain, and sports
coach, best known as the inventor of the game of BASKETBALL.
 He was born on November 6, 1861, Almonte, Canada West, province of Canada.
 He died last November 28, 1939 <78> Lawrence Kansas, U.S.
 his Alma Mater is in McGil University, University of Colorado

 13 Original Rules of Dr. Naismith


1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one hand or both hands.
2. 2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands never with fist.
3. 3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must be thrown it from the spot on which he
catches it, allowance id to be made for a man who catches the ball when running at good
speed.
4. The ball must be held in or between the hands, the arms or the body must not be used for
holding it.
5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, tripping, striking in any way the person of an opponent
shall be allowed. No substitute is allowed.
6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violation of rules 3, 4, and such as described in rule
5.
7. If either side makes three consecutive fouls, it counts a goal for the opponents consecutive
means without the opponents in the meantime making a foul.
8. A goal shall be made when the ball is thrown or batted from the grounds into the baskets and
stays there , providing those defending the ball do not touch or disturb the goal
9. When the ball goes out of bound, it shall be thrown into the field and played by the person
first touching it. The throwing is allowed for five seconds by the thrower. If he holds it
longer, it shall go to the opponent. If any side persists in delaying the game, the umpire shall
call a foul on the,.
10. The umpire shall be the judge of the men and shall note the foul and notify the referee when
three consecutive fouls have been made. He shall have power to disqualify men according to
rule 5.
11. The referee shall be the judge to the ball and shall decide when the ball is in play, in bounds,
to which side it belongs, and shall keep the time.
12. The time shall be two fifteen-minute halves, with five-minute rest between them
13. The side making the most goals in the time shall be declared winners. In case of draw, the
game may,
by agreement of the captains be continued until another goal is made.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
 Dimensions - the playing court is rectangle measuring 28m x 15m.

LESSON 3
PARTICIPANTS AND OFFICIALS

Players ,Substitutes, and Coaches


 a team composed of a COACH, an ASSISTANT COACH, and PLAYERS not more than 12
 PLAYERS -an athlete who plays the sport of basketball
 SUBSTITUTE – replacing one player with one another during match
 COACH – the act of directing and strategizing the behavior of a basketball team or individual
basketball player.

 Officials and their Duties


The duties and powers of referee are:
1. Inspect and approve all equipment.
2. Start the game with a toss of the coin and whoever wins takes the choice of baskets.
3. Toss the ball to start the game.
4. Declare the forfeiture or default of a game.
5. Make decisions of any point not specifically covered in the rules.

 Duties of Scorers
1. Record points scored, player foul, team foul, and charged time-out in the official scorebook of the
game.
2. Sound a signal for and charge time-out.

 Duties of Timers
1. One timer will keep record of playing time, and time of stoppage.
2. Handle the stop clock placed in front of him on a table for two timers to see.
3. A second stop watch is used in timing time-outs. The timer is provided with a horn to notify the
expiration of the playing time.
4. One of the timers shall operate the 30 second device and indicate violation by sounding the
signal.
5. Notify officials and timer when there are two minutes or less remaining in the fourth quarter or
second half.
