BASKET BALL

ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF BASKETBALL


The game of basketball was inverted in United states of America.
Dr. James Nais Meth of USA inverted it in December 1891 at
Springfield College. The origin of this game is very interesting in
the beginning 40 to 50 players used to be in I team. Two games
used to be play in a Gymnasium. A pain of basket were nailed on
the wall facing each other. One has to climb up to get the bull out
whenever a ball was you. After that Dr. James smith made
certain of this game. This game played first time on 22nd Jan
1292. First time give players fixed in a team. From 1895-1900
A.D. a lot of amended was done in rules of the game. First time
American Basketball effort for demonstration of this game 1978
Amsterdam Olympic but it could not get success. After that in
1932 Olympic effort were also made to introduce basketball. At
last in 1936 Olympic game which was held in Berlin-based
basketball federation was made from the very beginning USA
always dominated in basketball approximately in year 1934 in
India the game of basketball by V.M.C.A. College, Madras. Since
then basketball become popular in every part of India. The Indian
Basketball Federation was formed in 1950. After it was
consolidated at first time Asian game it was also completed in
Delhi.

LATEST RULES OF THE GAME


 Two teams of 5 players each try to score point by testing the
ball into the opposing team basket.
 They may are only their hands to control the ball and are
 not allowed to run holding the ball.
 A field goal Court for 2 points or 3 points. A free throw in
worth 1 point. This is indicated by raising 1 or 2 or 3 fingers
for score.
 The team with possession of the bull must attack within the
following time limit. After taking possession of the ball, It
has 28 sec to move the ball forward across the mid court
line 94 sec to take a short in basket.

TYPES OF BOARD USED IN BASKETBALL


 National Competition Board
 International Competition Board

LINES:
Side Lines: Two boundary lines running the length of
the board.
End line/Base line: Two lines running the width of the
court behind the backboard.
Mid-Court Line: Line that divides the court into two half.
Lane line: These lines run parallel to side line running from
free throw line to base line.
Free-Throw Line: 1 circle from where free throw lines are
taken.

3-Pointal Line: The area outside which a player converts a


basket team get 3 points. The line is called 3 Pointal lines.
Position of Score Table: The score table in the middle of the
court between the team benches.

Positions of substitutional table at the side of official table.


Substitution can be done any number of time but only when the
game stops.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED TO CONDUCT


THE GAME

Basketball: Ball made of rubber/Leather/or any synthetic


material to used in Basketball.
Basket hoop: Round shaped metal rim ring with net covered on
it.
Backboard: A rectangular board

TECHNICAL EQUIPMENTS
24-sec device: It is provided to 24-sec operator.
Whistle: It is for the official to start/restart on stop the game.
Scoreboard: Displays the score. Backboard for International
Competitions
Player Foul Marker: Numbering from 1-5, 1 to 4 in black
number and 5 in red number.

Team Foul Marker:


Score Feat: Used to record all the points and foul by the team.
Possession - Arrow: The plastic or wooden arrow used
by arrows to determine the match.

PLAYER'S UNIFORM
 Starts and Jersey is a player uniform.
 Jersey of the same dominant colour of front and back.
 All players must luck their jersey into - their playing shorts.
 Clearly visible numbers should be written on both sides of
the jersey.

DUTIES AND POWER OF CAPTAIN


 The captain is a player designated by his couch to
represent
 His team on playing court.
 He may communicate in Court Manner with the officials
during the game to obtain information.
 Organize the team member on court during game.

 Assist the officials.
 Act as Coach in the absence of couch.

DUTIES AND POWER OF COACH


 Submits the list of team members - to the official along with
the name of the captain.

1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarter.

Tied Score and Extra Period when the score is equal or tied at the
end of the match extra time of 5 min in given to break the tie.
There is no limit of extra period and are given till the no break.

HOW BASKET BALL GAME


START & RESTART
The game starts with 5 players each team 1st quarter starts with
a jump ball and the remaining quarter starts when the ball is at
the disposal of the player taking the throw in.

THROW IN
When a player standing outside the court passes the ball into the
playing court. He can pass the ball directly to his team mate or
can bounce the bull into the ground.

JUMP BALL
An official tosses the ball between two player of opening team to
start the game.

PROCEDURE
Two player of opposing team stand inside half of the centre circle
nearest to his own basket. The official tosses the ball upwards
between both the player. The ball is then tapped by one of the
players with hand after the ball has reached its highest point.

STATUS OF THE BALL


Live Ball Status:
 The ball is considered live when it leaves the hand of Refree
during jump ball.
 The hall is at disposal of players taking throw in.

Dead Ball Status:


 The ball is considered dead when a basket converted.

GOAL {Basket Bout}


A goal on basket occur when a live ball enter the basket from

RULES OF THROW IN
A Player Taking Throws in Shall and:
 Step into the court while releasing the ball.
 Take more than 6 sec.
 Step over the boundary line while releasing the ball.
 Throw the ball directly into the basket.
 The other player cannot step over or on have any part
of body over the boundary line.

TIME OUT
When the game is stop on the request of coach or assistant
coach.

Duration of timeout is time:


 A time out is given when the ball is dead.
 A time out starts for both the team with the whistle of
official and when the ball is dead.
 A timeout ends when the ball is for thrown in.
 Each team is granted two timeouts in the first half and
three in second half and one timeout in each extra period.
 Only the couch or assistant coach can request for timeout
by making a proper sign with his hands.
 The timeout begins with the official whistle and sign of
time out.
 The time out ends with the official whistle.

SUBSTITUTION
 Substitution is a act of sending of the substitute player
into the court as player and taking out one of the player of
the court.
 Substitution can be done when the ball is dead and the
clock is stop.

RULES FOR SUBSTITUTION


 Substitution can be done when the ball is dead and the

 A substitute requests the score table for substitution.
 A player who has committed 5 fouls cannot be substitution.
 The duration of substituting a player is 20 sec.
 Substitution can be done any number of time but only
when the

GAME LOST BY PENALTY


The act of losing or surrounding something as a penalty for
a mistakes or for fault failure to perform in a game or match.

RULES
 A team loses a game by forget if the team pass less then 5
player ready to play, 15 minutes after the game.

score shall be 20 to 0.

GAME LOST BY DEFAULT


The team loses the game by default if during the game it has less
than 2 players ready to play on the court.

PLAYER OUT OF BOUNDARIES


A player is considered out of sound when any part of his body is
contact with the floor or outside the boundary line if the player
moves out of the boundary.

BALL OUT OF BOUND


A ball is out of bound when it touch the pole on stack of the
backboard or any object above the playing court. When the ball
goes out of bound by the last player, the opponent team is
awarded side throw and possession of ball changes.

VIOLATION
It is an interaction of rules of game. It can be illegal action for
controlling on dribbling the ball during the
game. These violations are not noted over the score sheet
but opponent gains that possession of the ball.

TYPES OF VIOLATION
Travelling: Travelling is an illegal movement where a play that
occur player holding the ball one or both of his feet illegally.

Pivot: A pivot is a legal movement where a plan player keeps one


foot in a place and moves the other. The non-moving foot is
known as pivot.

Closely Guarded Player: When the player who is in possession of


ball is closely guarded by the opponent and distance is not more
than a half meter.

3 Second Violation: If the player remain in the districted of


opponent court for 3 second while his team are in possession of
ball it is 3 second violation.

5 Seconds Violation: When the player is guarded closely for 5


sec on more and does not passes, shoot or dribble that time we
called 5 seconds violation.

 5 seconds free throw violation

5 Seconds Throw in Violation: when a playing standing outside


the court passes the ball into the playing court he can pass the
ball within 5 seconds to his free team meat.

5 Seconds Closely Guarded Violation: The player bean guarded

8 Second Violation: When a player gains control of a ball in this

24 Second Violation: when a player gains control of the live ball


on the court a shoot short for goal within 24 second is indicated
by sound of the 24 second violation.

Back Court Violation: The team on a player who is in front court


within the ball is not allowed to pass the ball is the backcourt on

BASIC SKILLS AND FUNDAMENTAL SKILLS


Dribbling: Dribbling in an easer method of advancing the ball by
one - self and passing it to another player or shooting for basket
these are following types of dribbling.

TYPES
(a) High Dribbling: High dribbling is used when you want to
move the ball up the board very quickly. The bounce of the
ball should reach anywhere between your upper
thigh to slightly above your mind.

(b) Change of Base: White dribbling there is a variation in speed.


The base of dribbling is changed to get the defender of balance
and beat him.

(c) Cross Over: Shambling the ball between both the hands to
make change of directions. If your defender is trying
to prevent you from going to your right you can perform a
crossover dribble to your left. Then flip the ball across your
body from your right hand to your left hand.

(d) Between the Legs and behinds the Back: The player
dribbles to the other hands between his legs sometimes bring
the ball behind back to the other side of the body quickly.
Between the legs dribble is used to go fast a defender who is
defending you. Take a deep step form forward with your left
foot and flip the ball to your left hand.

(e) Passing: The labotary attack to move a light ball from player

TYPES
(a) Chest Pass: Chest pass is the most accurate pass and quick
pass where the ball is thrown with two hands chest level.

(b) Mouth Pass: A pass in which the ball bounces one from the
coat at about 2/3rd distance between both the players.

(c) Baseball Pass: Baseball pass covers long distance of the


court. The action of baseball pass is similar to pitching in
baseball.

(d) Outlet Pass: Defensive player receives the rebands. He .... on


one foot and passes the ball to his terminate to start a fast
break.

(e) No Look Pass: The pass is to give where a player looks at one
side but passes the ball in the other direction.

SHOOTING
(a) Layer Shot: A shot in which a player reach the ring
by taking 2 and a half step.

(b) Jump Shot: To perform this shot player slightly jump


to increasing the distance then release the ball from hand is
similar to free throw.

(c) Free Throw: A shooter stands behind the free throw line he
holds the ball in front of his face just below the eye level for
purpose of sighting. The ball is pushed towards basket with
full arm extension and wrists continue to flax.

(d) Hook Shot: In this shot the player does not look at the ball
and his shooting hand is on the side of the body. This helps to
keep the well away from the opponent.

(e) Bang Shot: A bang shot is a shot that has to bounds off the
backboard before the ball goes into the basket. It is useful as
the backboard helps guide the ball short a better accuracy.

(f) Slam Dung: It is a short when a player jumps high enough to


get a ball and ball is passed into the basket with a great force
from the top of the ring and goal is scored.

DEFENCE
(a) Man to Man Defense: A man to man defence each
player covers one player of the other team in man to
man defence to need to stay near to your player. When your
player has the ball you keep between the player and the
basket.

(b) Zone Defence: In zone defence each player covers the


particular area assigned to them. In zone defence each players
covers an area on the floor. The most common is the 3:2 in

this defence. There are two player who covers the top of the
zone & and three who play closer to the basket.

(c) Combination Defence: In this type of defence some of


the players are assigned to play man to man while rest of
the players play zone defence.

OFFENCE
(a) Early Offence: Its main aim is to attack before the defer in

(b) Motion Offence: Motion offence used by a player as a strong

FOULS
Personal Foul: If a player makes body contact with opponent

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL


GOVERNING BODY

BFI: The Governing and controlling body of basketball in India in


BFI. It was formed 1950. It organizes all the national tournament
and training camp for boys and girls to prepare team for
International competition.

FIBA: Fecleration International De Basketball FIBA was formed


on 18th June 1932. The headquarter FIB is in Switzerland FIBA
have two hundred thirteen national federation available to it. The
International tournament organized by FIBA are:
FIBA basketball world cup Olympic basketball tournament,
and three x three basketball etc. in various age categories for
men and women. The rules and regulation are established by
FIBA.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT

1. Youth National Basketball Championship:


It is all India interstate Championship which is organized
annually. The duration of the championship is two well the
tournament is played on the basis of league come known out
tournament approximately more than 25 team participates in
this tournament.

2. Federation Cup Basketball Championship:


It is also organized annually where top 8 men and women
team from previous senior national tournament participates in
federation cup basketball championship.

3. UBA Pro Basketball League:


The tournament was started in July 2015, where 8 team
participates. It is the first men's professional basketball
tournament. The head quarter of UBA is in Pune.
